Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayla Taylor.
Hi Jayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I began sewing at around age 10, inspired by watching my grandmother. Initially, it was just a casual interest, but my talent caught my mom’s attention, and she encouraged me to pursue it further. After high school, I followed her advice and enrolled in an Art and Design school. Later, I pursued my passion for fashion by earning a BFA in Fashion Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design. After graduation, I took the leap to fulfill my dream of relocating to California and establishing my own brand.
During my time in California, I’ve gained experience working at a design company, contributing to various industry projects, being featured in international magazines, collaborating with stylists and artists, and even had the honor of being invited to showcase my work at New York Fashion Week.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been easy. Initially, there were moments when I felt like throwing in the towel, questioning if pursuing fashion design was worthwhile. Like any artistic endeavor, fashion design demands significant investment before yielding returns, and many overlook the behind-the-scenes effort. Yet, looking at the bigger picture, everything has gradually fallen into place. As I persist in honing my craft and showcasing it to the world, recognition has started to come my way. I’m excited about the future of my career and have many plans in store.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My focus lies in couture designs, complemented by a lingerie line. Additionally, I’ve contributed to ready-to-wear projects and costume designs and undertaken freelance assignments for various clients. While my work is recognized for its consistent quality and collaborative ventures, what truly distinguishes me is my approach to garment design. I prioritize intuition over conformity, allowing inspiration to guide my creative process. One of my proudest achievements is realizing my dream of becoming a designer and showcasing my collections at prestigious Fashion Weeks.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
I consider myself fortunate in both my personal and professional life. By attending random art shows throughout California and networking with diverse artists, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate on projects and engage with various creative talents. Moreover, I’ve stumbled upon design opportunities in unconventional places that many wouldn’t typically explore.
