Conversations with Jax Jupiter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jax Jupiter.

Hi Jax, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a born and raised New York City girl who moved to Los Angeles two summers ago. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and packed what I could to start my new life here. I was unhoused for about a year before finally moving into my very own studio apartment. Since relocating, I have created content documenting my new life and navigating a different city. I have transformed my hardships and heartbreak into various creative endeavors. For instance, my magazine, DreamGrl, emerged from my experience with an emotionally abusive relationship. I needed an outlet to share self-love tips with others on similar journeys.

This spring and summer, I look forward to growing my social media presence and working toward my self-development goals.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of my struggles has been seeing girls my age, like my old classmates, living a “normal” college life while I was going through significant mental, emotional, financial, and sexual turmoil. I sometimes find myself overlooking how traumatic my experiences, as well as my friends’ experiences, were. We have had to witness our peers die one after another due to suicide or drug overdoses. I developed an unhealthy relationship with alcohol and money while feeling lost in my life a year after moving here.

I tried to prioritize my well-being while adjusting to new living conditions and a completely different lifestyle. I attended therapy once or twice a week and made the most of my income by visiting the local Target to buy personal hygiene and self-care items. One thing I knew I wanted to do, besides obviously leaving that center, was to create a better life for myself in the meantime.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a content creator and the editor-in-chief of my magazine. I started my YouTube channel after graduating to document all the changes in my life and my daily experiences. Last year, around this time, I reached 1,000 subscribers, and now I’m aiming for 1,500. Progress has been a bit slow, and I haven’t felt very inspired to create videos lately. Right now, I’m focusing on my well-being off-screen and exploring creative, interesting ideas that are outside my usual content.

I am currently working on my third magazine issue, which I publish online on my Canva website. I’m incredibly proud of my debut issue. I had this idea for so long but never managed to execute it. I used whatever money I had to invest in props for my photoshoot and propped my phone up on a stack of books to take pictures. The cover features one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken of myself.

What sets me apart from others is not just that my content is relatable but that it showcases a different lifestyle. Some creators may present one way online but live a completely different life. There have been times when I had to return clothes from photoshoots just to afford necessities. I even spent some of my last few dollars to sit in a café and make the final edits for my issue.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I have always been artistic and somewhat nerdy. I spent a lot of my time creating things and enjoying various forms of media, such as YouTube and Disney movies. Due to the abuse I experienced at home and my undiagnosed autism, I struggled in social situations with family and adults. However, at school, I was quite the chatterbox and had many friends. I excelled academically and have a passion for learning. Recently, I’ve been exploring personal development and self-growth books, and I want to rekindle my interest in science by reading about topics like planets and bugs.

While looking through my camera roll, I came across a picture of a journal entry from when I was about 11 years old, back in 2014. In it, I wrote down all the things I wanted to accomplish by the time I turned 21 in 2024. I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed, as back then, I always seemed to know what I wanted. However, life and the adults around me made me feel like I wasn’t sufficient to achieve those dreams. Yet, somehow, I made it. One of my goals was to pursue a career in journalism because I have always enjoyed writing. Now, I am studying journalism with a focus on printed media at PCC.
