Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaron Smalls
Hi Jaron, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Alexandria, Virginia, into a musically inclined family. My journey began at the age of five at Rhema Christian Center Church in Washington, DC, where I sang in choirs before thousands. My father, Jonathan Smalls Sr., conducted the orchestra and played trumpet at the church, while my mother, Lila Smalls, sang in the choir, fostering my love for music. My oldest brother, Jonathan Smalls Jr., played trumpet, saxophone, piano, and bass guitar. My second oldest brother, David Smalls, played guitar and trumpet. My third oldest sister, Anissa Smalls, played flute, piano, and sang. As the youngest in the family, I was deeply inspired by my older siblings’ passions. Being surrounded by talented writers and vocalists, including my best friend Katana Jefferson, fostered my development as a writer from a very young age.
After graduating high school in Fayetteville, NC, my sister-in-law, Janelle Smalls, provided me with the opportunity to sing background for BET’s “Bobby Jones Gospel,” the first and only nationally syndicated Black gospel television show. Subsequently, my sister, Anissa Smalls, introduced me to a group sponsored by the Justus League with Cesar Comanche and Chaundon in Raleigh, NC, where I had my first solo performance, showcasing my production, writing, and vocal talents. After these events, I gained the confidence to release music independently, spending a few years developing my sound while collaborating with various writing and production camps.
In 2021, my dedication to music culminated in a collaboration with multi-platinum producer T2 and his UK label, RollaCoasta Music Limited. Together, we released unique R&B records, including my debut single, “Side Effects,” which marked a pivotal moment in my career. In 2022, I released my debut project, “Summer’s Over,” featuring production by T2 and diamond producer Ambezza. The following year, my second single, “Memory Lane,” was featured on the UK’s KISS FM radio, hosted by Ellie Prohan. Meeting with my creative director, Mr. SOC, in Charlotte, NC, during this period enabled me to establish my personal brand as the artist I aspired to be. This exposure led to my relocation to California, where I had the privilege of performing at Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. In 2024, I released my latest single, “See Thru,” and my second project, “Dusk Falls Before Dawn,” with more exciting projects underway.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The path to success is filled with lessons and trials, many of which I have experienced firsthand. In 2020, the year before I started working with my current producer, I slept in my car while traveling from state to state for shows and studio sessions. Many of my friends from earlier stages of my life are no longer in my circle. I’ve also encountered numerous independent labels, artists, and producers who conducted poor business practices. However, striving to embody the change I wish to see has yielded the greatest rewards, despite the challenges. Over time, I have realized that what is meant for you will always find its way to you, and everything in life comes full circle when you let go of what doesn’t serve you. My journey has taught me to move forward with love.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an R&B artist with a deep understanding of the music industry, including musicianship, production, and engineering, which I cultivated from an early age. This solid foundation has facilitated my growth in the music. My core strengths are in singing and songwriting, with my delivery skills developing over the years. My unique perspective on music, shaped by my inability to access mainstream or underground records during my childhood, sets me apart. I take pride in my drive and commitment to overcoming adversity. My innate optimism and faith are key components of my identity.
What matters most to you?
Understanding and nurturing myself enables me to extend unconditional love and blessings to others. I was taught to give what I wish to receive, yet I often overlooked my own needs. Cultivating self-love and respect has empowered me to establish personal boundaries and honor others’ boundaries more effectively. Beyond self-love, my family and authentic relationships are of the utmost importance to me. My family’s unconditional love has profoundly shaped who I am, allowing me to continuously offer love to others.
