Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Kong.
Hi Janet, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, my name is Janet Kong, aka Thepinkong (The Pink Kong), and I am a professional nail technician who prioritizes healthy nails first before pretty nails. I started my own small business back in 2017 when I took a risk of being my own boss. I wanted to provide a nail service I would love to receive as a nail lover myself. A cute clean space that is personal and private, where clients are not rushed in and out, but rather heard. A place to relax to decompress, a mini therapy session. But most importantly, a nail salon that truly care about the health of the nails. That’s why my motto is Healthy Nails First, Pretty Nails Second.
In April of 2022, after finding out I was pregnant with my second child while my firstborn was only 3 months old, I decided to call the quits due to the situation. However, exactly one year later, I decided to start back up because I didn’t feel complete without being the thinking; I felt like a chunk of my life was missing. My postpartum was going downhill… and the moment I decided to start back up, I was able to pick myself up and slowly but surely finding myself again. Because let me tell you. Motherhood is the hardest job ever.
Even after a whole year of taking a break, I’m so thankful to have my clients back and to see some new faces. My marketing skills helped catapult my business into a thriving upscale boutique shop, garnering a virtually unheard-of perfect five stars on Yelp! I have stellar reputation via highly interactive Instagram and to collaborate on beauty and fashion events with influencers. I not only run the shop and does the nails, but creates all content for social media, taking photos, editing them, and consistently sharing for followers, along with content creating for other Business and Brand.
Dedicated to detail, quality, service, and sanitation, I strive to be provide all clients with top-notch service in all ways possible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This road has definitely not been a smooth one, but to look back now, it was a good learning lesson as it helped me grow into a wiser, mature person. When you are your own boss, you’re pretty much on clock 24/7. There is no vacation/sick days; you can’t call out because there’s no one to take over. You’re not guaranteed a consistent pay, as some months may be slower than others. All the responsibilities are on you; therefore, personal time is rare and sacrificed, meaning having a social life isn’t common, so maintaining a relationship doesn’t go so great.
However, being passionate and truly loving what you do, the struggles may be a struggle for the moment, but in the long run, there’s a lesson that is taught. Which is why I am thankful for my struggles and wouldn’t change it for anything, as it formed me into the person that I am today. Also, those struggles helped me prepare for this motherhood life.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a professional nail technician that specializes in giving healthy manicure on natural nails to grow them or strengthen them with gel manicure plus nail art. I am proud to be authentic in what I do when it comes to trends. I don’t try to keep up with the trend. Rather, I like to have consultation with clients to help find the best shape, color, design that works for their hands/nails. Most say it’s the best manicure they’ve received. Quality of anything.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Since I am restarting my business as a first-time mom of 2 littles, my current goal is to continue to grow my clientele and to maintain my small business. I also am looking into offering 1:1 classes, working on events, and to grow myself more on social media platforms to create more content, eventually hoping to own my own brand.
