Conversations with James Faulkner

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Faulkner.

Hi James , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background is in the entertainment industry, where I worked for 40+ years as a Graphic Designer. Beginning as a print designer, creating album covers and movie one-sheets. In the mid-90s I won 2 Emmys for my work in TV.
With the onset of COVID, my TV career ended in 2020.
Since 2020, I have been
working as a Collage Artist. I was born and grew up in England, moving to the US with my family in the late 60s.
My inspiration comes from my father, who was a prolific Artist.

I have exhibited and sold my work in California and internationally.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth, not necessarily. I have freelanced for a good portion of my career. Earning a living and supporting a family can be a challenge there are good times and not so good times career-wise.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I made the decision to move back to my creative roots away from the digital world. I started creating handmade greeting cards, which were collages, back in the early 1990s. I have a steady flow of orders coming from various high-end department stores on the East Coast.

I grew tired of having my work dictated, so I left the greeting card business after a short run. While I was still working in TV, I created collages on the side and started to exhibit.
I now try to devote as much time as possible to creating and promoting my collage work

What does success mean to you?
Getting recognition and exposure for ones work. Finding peace and happiness in what you create.
