Conversations with Hirushi Jayasena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hirushi Jayasena.

Hirushi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m truly excited to be a part of the Voyage LA platform and share my journey with you all – I’m a professional singer from Sri Lanka, currently based in Los Angeles for a professional camera training. Born in England, raised in Sri Lanka, and educated in the US, I was opened to many culturally distinct experiences and a holistic approach to life. I’m truly grateful to see those transitions in my life and has definitely inspired me as an artist.

I have loved standing in front of the studio mic since I was six years old and finally kickstarted my career in music professionally at the age of 17. Back home, my love for the camera began with my career on national television as a media personality that I pursued for almost eight years, along with my music video releases and cameos. Although my educational scope was based on Psychology and Business, it taught me more to navigate in the industry and create human experiences and storytelling in my own way. I’m currently in LA to learn storytelling, performing for the camera that will further help me in my craft. It’s been amazing to work in a new setting and meet new people with a fresh angles to ideas!

Last but not least, I want to remember my Alma Mater Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo, and UCF, Harvard, UWTSD, and UCLA for providing me an unforgettable decade of education and making me who I am today. I believe that all we do comes together in ways we can’t imagine.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were different types of challenges and mind barriers growing up when figuring out who I am, and what I was meant to be. These challenges are also a part of life, especially when you’re stepping into new cultures, communities and ascending to different stages in you’re career and life. There were many learning curves as a young public figure in terms of how I should inspire others. It’s been so great so far and I’m grateful that I had my family, friends and peers in the industry who gave me strength and joy in all of this!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have released eight singles, four soundtracks for film and television back in Sri Lanka. I have five more releases on the way, overall based on genres of classical pop, Synth-wave and hip-hop. I have had an exciting journey experimenting with acting, action stunts, and fun creative work driven with caricature, special effects and AI art tools.
