Conversations with Guillermo Flores

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guillermo Flores.

Guillermo Flores

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It really was something very casual. In college, I had my first course with Adobe Photoshop and I loved it. I mean, I found the perfect tool to create illustrations. And I was going to study music. But finally, I decided on design. That was my breaking point. When I was a kid, my mother had a lot of books, and these books showed me a lot of nature and birds. She was a singer; she recorded like 70 studio albums. The artwork on the covers was inspiring also. So maybe that’s a reason that I love to create illustrations. I loved to read a lot of books when I was a kid.

I specialized in collage, illustration, and digital art. He has collaborated with companies around the world such as: APPLE, SEPHORA, CIRQUE DU SOLEIL, NIKE, CITI PRIVATE BANK, MARC JACOBS, ADOBE, and BURNING MAN among others, serving as creative and art director in multiple projects, developing illustration, identity brand, strategy, planning, and execution.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been a great challenge. I started my career as a web designer, working in advertising agencies mainly doing branding, eventually I started doing editorial illustration, and now I am focused 100% on advertising illustration, the biggest challenge has been looking for new opportunities outside of my country, traveling and doing a lot of PR, I tried to make everyone know my work, but in the end the hard work has paid off greatly.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As I mentioned before, I dedicate myself to doing illustrations for advertising. I also do art direction, and that has allowed me to collaborate with big brands around the world; my technique is digital collage, my theme is surreal, and my cultural background plays an important role. I like it a lot of nature and create dreamlike scenarios full of vegetation and color.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Yes, definitely! During my career, I have had to take many risks and venture into new markets and look for opportunities in other countries even without mastering the language, this has allowed me to be published in super important design magazines, personally I believe that you should take risks and be aware that You don’t always win, however I like to consider it as an investment and in the end everything adds up, I have always bet heavily on myself, and I think it is worth doing so.
