Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Gilmore
Greg, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from Cleveland, Ohio, and I made the move to Los Angeles about 14 years ago. My best friend, our dogs, and I packed up everything we owned and drove across the country, ready for a fresh start. But, like many big moves, things didn’t go exactly as planned. I faced a lot of challenges and complications, and I quickly ran out of money—I had only brought about $3,000 with me, and by the second month, it was all gone.
I was fortunate to find a salon called Eclectic that allowed me to start working on commission. From there, I slowly began to build my clientele through perseverance, hard work, and patience. It took about five years before I could comfortably support myself, and during that time, I learned a lot about the industry. I discovered the importance of hard work, the value of my talent, and when to say yes or no to opportunities.
Eventually, things began to change for the better. I started working as a national educator for Design Essentials, and as my popularity and skill level grew, I began collaborating with other brands. Today, I’m proud to serve as one of Moroccanoil’s Global Color Ambassadors, representing the company and the color category at major trade shows and on social media.
Something that people might not know about me is that, despite my professional demeanor, I’m a very down-to-earth, laid-back, and approachable guy. I’m dedicated and serious about my salon, career, and artistry, but I’m also learning to give myself grace, take time to rest, and appreciate the little things in life.
Recently, I opened a new salon on La Brea, in the Miracle Mile area of Los Angeles. I work alongside two stylists and a nail technician, and we focus on providing exceptional hair care to women who are serious about maintaining a healthy relationship with their natural tresses. Our services include silk presses, treatments, cuts, color, and tape-in extensions.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Looking back on my life in Los Angeles, I realize that the challenges and lessons I faced were crucial in building my self-confidence and shaping my character. Those experiences taught me to rely on myself, become independent, and develop creative problem-solving skills. I also learned the nuances of navigating the entertainment industry, understanding the importance of recognizing my lane, and knowing when to step back, even when presented with seemingly incredible opportunities.
It’s easy to say yes to an amazing opportunity, but without the right skills, you can quickly find yourself in over your head. I learned that success is about recognizing your strengths, honing your craft, and promoting your expertise to carve out a respected path for yourself that you can navigate with clarity.
Reflecting on it all, it certainly wasn’t easy, but I had the tenacity to push through because I had a deep desire to achieve more for myself—more than I could ever have in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. There was no turning back, and failure wasn’t an option. For me, succeeding was the only choice.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I’m a Cut and Color Specialist within the medium of Cosmetology
At the core, I am an artist, and I’m drawn to a wide range of creative projects. What sets me apart from other artists is the unique perspective I bring to everything I create. I have a deep love for learning, reading, and studying psychology, people, and their stories. This curiosity allows me to infuse each project with thoughtful insights and a distinct point of view.
I enjoy exploring the deeper, often hidden, meanings behind the work I do. For instance, when a new client comes in for a big chop, I understand that it’s often more than just a haircut—it’s a reflection of a significant change they’re seeking in their life. These transformations are usually inspired by pivotal moments that lead to personal growth or a new direction. When I share these transformations, I like to include the stories behind them, adding a layer of intimacy and personal connection to my work. This storytelling approach allows viewers to connect more deeply with the art because they can see themselves in the narrative.
I have a soft spot for the underdog, perhaps because I was one myself. I see the heart that lies within everyday people and everyday life—the small annoyances and simple pleasures that light me up and inspire me. This connection drives me to create something that can be more captivating or moving for others. I’ve always loved working with real, everyday women and highlighting their stories. Unlike celebrities or prominent figures, these women often have incredible stories and lessons to share, even if they don’t have the platform to do so. I believe that everyone can learn something valuable from another person’s experience, as many of life’s lessons are universal. My work aims to bring these personal, intimate, and relatable stories to the forefront, offering insight and connection that resonates with a wider audience.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
To me, happiness is a constantly evolving and shifting experience. It’s something we often chase, yet find difficult to hold onto once we’ve caught it. I’ve come to understand that happiness moves and changes, flowing through different spaces in our lives. This understanding brings me peace, as it reminds me that even when happiness feels elusive, it’s never truly out of reach.
I find happiness in connecting with interesting people and engaging in conversations that delve into topics like metaphysics, spirituality, sociology, and community. When I seek happiness, I know I can always find it within the peaceful surroundings of my home, where I enjoy reading, writing, researching, and simply relaxing.
A lot of my happiness also meets me at the salon, where I have the privilege of bonding, laughing, and connecting with clients and fellow stylists. However, some of my happiest moments occur when I’m on stage, addressing an audience. There’s a special kind of joy that comes from being in the flow, knowing exactly what I want to say and how I want to say it. It creates a reciprocal exchange of positive vibes and great energy between myself and the audience, which is truly exhilarating.
