Today we’d like to introduce you to Georgia Douglas.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in the greater Seattle area surrounded by abundant nature. As a kid, I have tender memories of my mother’s botanical artwork filling our home and my father’s deep love for a yellow garden rose. As I grew up, I came to know the names of flowers while dirtying my hands in my mother’s Dahlia garden. As a young twenty-something, I was working in the nonprofit sector to which I quickly found that sitting at a desk all day was not going to be my life’s calling. I started missing and longing for something I could dirty my hands with again. I then quit my desk job and worked as a barista for some time. My boss there sent me to a conference that empowers women in the workplace where I found that I wanted to do something that came from my labor. In my late teens, I worked on a flower farm for a summer, so I thought I might give working with flowers another go! Flash forward a few years and one giant pandemic later and I am a 25 years old business owner catering widely to the greater Southern California area and beyond.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not! There have been many days of tears, many late nights worried I am going to utterly fail, lots of 3am stress sessions and frequent 16-hour work days. I think one of the hardest struggles is coming toe-to-toe with your own fears of what you’re capable of and if others will see it in you as well. For being in such beautiful industry others will eat you alive, and if you don’t watch your mind, you’ll eat yourself alive too.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a florist who specializes in whimsical, garden-style florals for all events. I am proud to be a transplanted, young women business owner providing for myself from the creation of my hands. What I believe sets me apart is my deep desire for collaboration. Whether that be collaborating with a client, other artists from other mediums, or my florist colleagues: I highly value seeing art in one another’s vision. After all, we belong to each other.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I am absolutely a risk taker for the sake of betterment. When I was freshly 21, I loaded up my Volkswagen GTI and moved from Washington to California without knowing a single soul. I paid $400 to live in an open loft right above the living room of another family’s home, often waking up to the sound of their toddler watching the beloved kid’s movie Trolls. I wouldn’t be who I am now without her then.
I believe you won’t find yourself in places of challenge without risk. And without challenge, you miss the opportunity to get to know new (or very old) parts of yourself. Risk has offered me the gift of deep self-knowing and self-trust. My limits, my boundaries, my safe places have all been discovered by taking a risk.
