Today we’d like to introduce you to Gemma Wu.
Hi Gemma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am Siqi (Gemma) Wu, a visual graphic designer who integrates my own design style and cultural background while exploring the boundaries and infinity of design. By combining these contradictory concepts, to developed my own design style that originates from the boundaries and infinity. My design perspective and insight into thinking stem from my professional animation design studies in China, resulting in rich visual expression skills and the strongest sense of framing and sensitivity to color composition. After practical experience and accumulation in China, I believe that the future direction of design development will focus on the Internet. Therefore, to go abroad exploring a new vision I choose to continue gartering the acknowledgement from the San Francisco Academy of Art University. After obtaining a master’s degree in 2017, I defined myself as a “design expressionist”, who how to convey information and how to express information to the extreme. Expanding my perspective is also another goal of pursuing self-improvement. Focusing on user product design, creating product pages that are more suitable for users through practice and extensive data analysis, integrating the concept of “service” into the design style of this period, and adapting to a wider user base as a diversified design solution and product style.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As a designer, with my personal aesthetic insights and preferences. How to accurately convey one’s own characteristics and information to customers or to meet their needs is a challenge that many designers, including myself. Understanding the preferences and needs of customers is a very important basic ability, I need to understand this world on my own and learn to accept and appreciate different forms of beauty.
However, there are also cases of misunderstandings, as well as cases where the other party did not accurately explain their ideas, resulting in the entire conceptual plan being completely different from the other party’s expectations. A more diverse work atmosphere, more experience accumulation, and a more intense work rhythm allow designers to further explore their own possibilities. Therefore, effective “communication” is the most important way. Design with customer experience as the core, and improve one’s communication skills and collaboration within a team with cultural backgrounds.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Designers are not only “serving” customers but more importantly, serving as a bridge of communication, obtaining customer information, and providing feedback on their needs. This is precisely the “boundary” of design, where tools gradually simplify narrow sense “design”. The industry’s requirements for designers have always been lagging behind. Therefore, the concept is that design thinking can change the user experience of life. Designers use design concepts to create a virtuous cycle between products and users. The ‘boundless’ design focuses on the interaction between humans and technology. Understand what ‘design’ can do, what is happening, and what has already happened. The purpose of design is to provide users with a positive and enjoyable experience.
I joined Mivatek in 2018 as a graphic visual designer. Focus on user product design, create product pages that are more suitable for users through practice and a large amount of data analysis, integrate the concept of “service” into the design style of this period, and adapt to a wider user population as a diversified design solution and product style.
In a real sense, what made me “unlimited” my own design concept was that after I joined Miro Health in December 2018, I had a more diversified working atmosphere, more experience accumulation, and a more intense work pace, which made me. During my work at Miro Health, I was responsible for the page design of the new platform and built products that are more suitable for user experience and company culture with eclectic color sensitivity and the core composition framework for conveying information. As a designer, I can further explore my own possibilities, so “communication” is the most important way as a designer.
How do you think about luck?
Luck is a source of inspiration for designers, and in my opinion, it is not inexhaustible and therefore leads to many contradictions. Therefore, I believe that Reverse Thinking is my way of gaining more energy and luck. Dare to “think in the opposite direction”, develop thinking in the opposite direction, and explore deeply from the opposite side of the problem. Learning to think in reverse can break through more boundaries, and also need to learn to dialectically approach problems and think and take a look at everything in reverse, which may lead to astonishing discoveries and unexpected gains.
