Conversations with Gary Goldstein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Goldstein.

Hi Gary, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, I began my career as a movie publicist but at one point moved into screenwriting. I started off writing episodic TV, branched out into screenplays and stage plays, added TV movies to the mix and then, more recently, wrote several novels. I’ve enjoyed a really varied and satisfying writing career.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? No. Plenty of bumps, setbacks, and delays along the way, but who doesn’t have those? But I’ve learned from the difficulties and tried to use them to propel me forward, not back. As a result, I like helping other writers navigate similar struggles; if I can save a fellow writer a little pain or let them know they’re not alone in their obstacles (that is, we’ve ALL been there) hopefully it will keep them continuing to write, be a bit less discouraged and essentially hang in there.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a writer of screenplays, stage plays, and novels, I’m generally known for comedies, romantic comedies, and dramedies. Still, I’ve also written several full-on dramas including my latest novel “The Mother I Never Had.” I’m proud of the range and scope of my work but also the consistency of output and, hopefully, that I’ve amused, entertained, and/or provoked thought or discussion from viewers and readers. What sets me apart is maybe the various disciplines I’ve written for and the way I’ve expanded my writing output over the years. But we’re all just trying to write the best material we can!

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up I was always interested in movies and books, among other things, and that stayed consistent into my adult life. Personality-wise I was sometimes the kid who wisecracked in class, which may have gotten laughs but didn’t thrill certain teachers. I was a sort of an A-/B+ student, though not so much in math and the sciences. I may have also sometimes been a bit more reserved as a kid than I am now.
