Today we’d like to introduce you to Forouzan Safari.
Hi Forouzan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m an Iranian artist based in Los Angeles. When I was little, I was very interested in doodling on any available surface around me, such as paper, walls, and clothes. Growing up in Isfahan and observing its stunning architecture also increased my fascination with art, particularly Iranian painting, patterns, and motifs. On the other hand, my mom’s passion for making clothes and embroidery filled our home with fashion magazines, inspiring me to draw people. While I grew up doing painting and drawing, it was in high school that I became captivated by graphic design and illustration.
After moving to Los Angeles in 2013, I pursued my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting. This experience deepened my sense of critical thinking and conceptual exploration in my art. I felt compelled to address issues I faced in Iran that resonate deeply with me as a woman and a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
I discovered digital art as my preferred medium for creation. Sharing my illustrations online connected me with fellow artists and activists, transforming my identity from a painter to an illustrator. My love for storytelling led me to complete my Master of Fine Arts in Animation from UCLA in 2023. Today, I work as both an illustrator and animator, utilizing my skills to amplify the voices of marginalized communities and spark conversations that drive positive change.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey as an artist has been challenging, particularly when I entered into sensitive and controversial topics. I wrestled with societal expectations and cultural norms while addressing my sexuality in my work. In a society where discussions about sexuality and women’s rights met with resistance, openly addressing these issues, I found myself struggling with internal conflicts and external pressures. The fear of judgment from my family and my culture weighed heavily on me, knowing that my work could potentially provoke negative reactions and social exclusion.
Furthermore, the issues I’m working on placed me in a politically charged environment, where every artistic expression becomes a potential act of disobedience against the current system. I met individuals who were shocked by my work and unwilling to break societal taboos. Yet, their reactions strengthen my determination to continue pushing boundaries because I strongly believe that creating art about these topics can effect change and inspire meaningful discussions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My personal experiences and beliefs inform my creative process, guiding me to new creations. In my work, I enjoy challenging Iran’s societal norms by depicting queer people openly appearing and living everyday life in public spaces. Women bravely walk in the streets with no hijab, symbolizing their resistance against the restrictive rules of hijab for their freedom. Through thought-provoking imagery, I aim to humanize complex issues, inspire action, and bring up empathy and understanding among viewers.
My work reflects my belief in the power of acceptance. I aim to create a world where everyone respects each other’s beliefs and opinions and where freedom of expression is both celebrated and protected. My main objective is to inspire and stimulate thought, encouraging viewers to imagine the peaceful world I passionately desire.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Reflecting on my past, I’ve realized that I’ve always been drawn to taking risks. Whether it was embracing the uncertainties of pursuing art as a career or investing in my education, I’ve never hesitated to step into the unknown. These decisions were significant risks, but they ultimately led to rewarding outcomes.
In my opinion, effective risk management involves more than just taking big chances without careful consideration. It requires thoughtful analysis of potential outcomes and implementing strategies to confront challenges.
Despite the difficulties on my path, I’m committed to overcoming obstacles and ensuring that unprivileged voices are heard.
