Conversations with Feng Shui Jimmi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Feng Shui Jimmi.

Feng Shui, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Baltimore and being born to a father who is a Dj first prompted my love for house music and hiphop which grew over the years and inspired my versatility as a musician. I always hid my love for music since being a vocalist is intimidating without any prior professional training, not to mention experiencing the divorce of my mother and father when I was four years old. Growing up with a single mother and younger sister, I was pushed to excel in academics and sports since my family believed that was a more stable and reliable path for a young black man to be on. Meanwhile, outside my house I had to deal with violence, judgment, feelings of inadequacy, projection and all these other negatives that just hover over the city. However, once I moved to Los Angeles during the pandemic FengShui Jimmi, the artist, was born. A month prior to recording my first freestyle, I attended Drake’s birthday party here in Hollywood and I had the pleasure to cross paths with artists like Drake, Chris Brown, J. Cole, Offset & Jack Harlow.

The freedom my first songs brought me last year in December lead me to getting noticed at the beginning of this year in January by Rel Carter, Jay-Z’s nephew, music distribution company Equity Distro. Being new to the music industry with no resources here in Los Angeles, I was eager to see the process of dropping an album. I quickly learned that being an artist is all about unlocking your creativity and sticking with it against all odds. I locked in for five months, recording everything from my iPhone, and chose nine songs that described my journey in life trusting Jesus, marrying the woman of my dreams, embarking on my dream in music, and breaking free from the bondage of outside judgment/false expectation and LA to the Moon was finished & released in May.

In July, the world was blessed with an album from Beyonce – I know you are thinking what does this have to do with Feng Shui Jimmi, my thoughts exactly. Until I realized in her hit single ‘Break My Soul’, she drops a bar that states, “Worldwide hoodie with the mask outside, in case you forgot how we act outside”. This actually refers my wife and I’s Youtube channel content in which we are traveling and detailing our relationship and move from East to West Coast, and the “Worldwide Hoodie” is featured in many of the episodes filmed in 2021. Of course, this gave me a tremendous amount of hope to what the future has to come and also let me know that my efforts are not going in vain.

Since then, I have been on an emotional rollercoaster as a new artist who has a bunch of talent and work to show for it, who’s just waiting patiently to be acknowledged by the listeners who really need to hear my perspective, just like I needed to hear all the legends I heard growing up, those who helped me stay focused and continue to dream big, even when things got dark.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing in life comes easy, especially your dreams. I’m still traveling my road to fame as an Independent artist with minimum resources. I’ve had to create my own lane in hip hop. My background isn’t a “traditional” dope dealer story, my mom may have dated one, but I was never bold enough to sale drugs. I chose basketball. Now that it’s been a year and I’ve recorded 103 songs all on my cell phone, which I am extremely proud of, I’ve realized a musician like Me does not exist. Its always difficult being on the front line of a revolution, we’ve seen people of all walks of life endure and overcome challenges when being the first.

My music distribution deal only allows people to stream my album on all platforms, but financing for marketing & studio time is all on me. These are just some of the industry struggles, not to mention being in a new city with a wife and building a strong foundation to set us up for the future. There are non-believers, haters, people who will lead you in the wrong direction in an attempt to sabotage what you have built, so discernment and maintaining a strong sense of self-worth are some of the other challenges that new artists face as well.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Many people are curious about my chosen artist name. So, here it is… through my life I’ve always had the drip or Feng Shui additionally even when I wasn’t living up to my full potential I always wanted to exude tranquility & peace through my presence & words, that’s the Feng Shui. And Jimmi [Hendrix], is the musician that I most identify with – as in most influential of all time. Feng Shui Jimmi specializes in bringing a dream/manifestation to life through his perspective on HipHop and R&B. And I plan on doing this through my artistry for years to come.

I am known for my freestyle ability and spiritual wordplay, which I am referred to as the One-Take King. I am most proud of my resilience and consistent pursuit of my goals despite all the negativity and doubt that has attempted to end me and my dreams.

The thing that sets me apart from others is that I make music for married couples. My music has a strong sense of love, respect, connection, loyalty, and luxury experience. I stay away from violent references and make it a point to encourage my listeners to break free from status quo and to do what makes you happy. Happiness is the key to doing anything GREAT. People go to jobs all the time that they do not love, and their work typically reflects that same lack of love. My music is about getting back to the people and the things that we love the most, protecting those things and figuring out a way to monetize those gifts – rather than doing something that someone else told you to do. No matter who they are.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Hopefully, Nike does not sue me for this, but Just Do It! Creativity is about facing your fears and rising above all of the things that were designed to hold you back from your true potential. Society is not going to always encourage you to do things for yourself, especially not those closest to you. Life as an artist is about being strong and finding a balance to your life that fits your art and most importantly makes YOU feel worthy. Back then, I wish I knew that.
