Today we’d like to introduce you to Fangjian Li.

Fangjian Li

Hi Fangjian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Fangjian Li, a graduate film student at ACCD. My journey into the film industry began with the movie “Making Waves,” which ignited my profound interest in sound design. Consequently, I decided to specialize in sound during my third semester. Over the past two years, I’ve delved into the intricacies of sound, recognizing its transformative ability to evoke emotions and enhance a film’s atmosphere. Believing in its pivotal role in visual storytelling, I’ve also engaged in on-set sound recording for various short films, showcasing my meticulous and creative approach. This journey has not only enhanced my professional skills but has also contributed to personal growth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sound is abstract. When I watch films after working on sound design, attentive listening reveals the ingenious soundscapes. Achieving harmony among various sounds for an optimal storytelling effect requires thoughtful consideration and practical experience. In the initial stages of sound work, my perspective wasn’t comprehensive, and repeated exposure to my work made it challenging to identify issues. Hence, seeking diverse opinions at such times is crucial. Each revision may seem better, yet it’s a continual refinement process, contributing to the perfection of sound.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

This journey has not only enhanced my professional skills but has also contributed to personal growth. For location sound mixing:

I’ve handled various short films involving diverse wardrobe textures like silk gowns, bikinis, police uniforms, and trench coats. I’ve even experimented with planting lavaliers in props when wardrobe posed challenges for audio capture. So, I bring considerable experience in strategically placing lavaliers based on different clothing and set designs.

For sound design:

I have experience in commercial, thriller, and narrative projects, contributing to various stages of sound design, including dialogue editing, foley, and sound effects. Tailoring my work to different genres and content, my goal is consistently to tell the best possible story.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Pasadena is a tranquil and ideal city for residence. In the past two years, I haven’t considered moving to another city because my ears and eyes thoroughly enjoy the atmosphere here.
