Conversations with Erin Carere

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Carere.

Hi Erin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Hello! My name is Erin Carere, and I’m an award-winning screenwriter, actress, singer + author.

I was born ‘n raised on the banks of the Mississippi in small-town Minnesota. I attended the University of MN-TC (where I earned B.A. in English Literature, Magna Cum Laude) + Manhattan School of Music.

I then toured the US/Europe as a singer-songwriter before moving to Los Angeles 15 years ago! Very quickly I earned my SAG + AEA cards alongside ASCAP membership. My spinout records album, POET’S LOVELY DAUGHTER, garnered critical praise.

After my music career stalled, I began writing + performing one-woman shows about hilarious things like eating disorders & terrible relationships.

My first one-woman show, THE ONE, toured the US; another one-woman show, STANDUPERA, premiered at the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Among my notable acting roles? The lead in the Emmy-award-winning ALABAMA SNAKE on HBO, a stint with the Pulitzer-prize nominated TAYLOR MAC’S 24-DECADE HISTORY OF POPULAR MUSIC, + a much-watched episode of SEX SENT ME TO THE E.R.

In college, I wrote plays + one-woman shows that became cult hits + festival winners; once in Los Angeles, I began screenwriting.

I partnered in this endeavor with my husband Carlo. Together, we’ve written multiple award-winning, optioned, and/or produced TV pilots + feature screenplays.

Our pilot SPY V SPIA premiered as an Official Selection at the Oscar- BAFTA and Canadian Film Awards-qualifying LA Shorts International Film Festival in July 2022. It has gone on to win Best TV Pilot, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Cinematography + Best Rom-Com; it’s an Official Selection in 20 Fests as of November 2022 including: LA Independent Film Festival, Chelsea Film Festival, LA Femme Film Festival, Hex After Dark Film Festival, Studio City Film Festival, Austin Comedy Film Festival, Portland Comedy Film Festival, New Zealand Web Festival and more.

Our short film NEAR DEATH won or placed in multiple film festivals before being licensed to Tubi, Roku Channel, Xumo, Typhoon, Plex, and more, totaling 13 streamers or channels.

Our television pilot DARK HORIZONS/ REVERSE won 11 screenwriting contests + placed in over 40 others, including Final Draft Big Break, Sun Valley Film Festival, the ISA Screenwriting Fellowship + more. In August 2022, we signed a shopping agreement with Citizen Skull Productions for the project as both a feature film and television series.

Feature script TIME ZERO placed at the Atlanta Film Festival, the Nashville Film Festival + more before being optioned by award-winning filmmaker Damon Jamal and In Yo FACE Filmworks in June 2022 from an InkTip listing.

As a fiction writer, my as of yet unpublished novel GHOSTING SHAKESPEARE was long listed for the LeapFrog Press Fiction Prize (still in the running as of November 2022) and named an Official Selection at the Catalyst Content Festival.

This is career stuff.

As a human, my journey has been about continuing to honor my heart, my dreams, my integrity, and excellence in my craft. I always aim to be of service through my talents and my labor.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My road has been bumpy and full of challenges!

From my own mistakes to unlucky breaks-

I feel like everything is an opportunity to grow, more to the point, to be in gratitude and expand.

Now. Having said THAT… I think that with every project there are obstacles! And they change according to what you’ve learned and how you’ve grown. 🙂

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve been one of those hyphenate types (I prefer the term Renaissance Woman) as long as I can remember. I love to tell stories about underdogs and fish-out-of-water, about misunderstood and surprisingly resourceful people who grow through adversity. Carlo and I write primarily thrillers and sci-fi, although we also have had success with comedies and dramas. We often like to include supernatural elements.

As a singer, I’m a woman with a big, passionate voice who was a singer-songwriter for years but with classical and Broadway training.

And as an actress, I get a lot of those “intense” roles. It makes me laugh- I think of myself as a small-town Minnesota girl; I play a lot of high-stakes roles where the lady’s got a secret.

What makes you happy?
Nature. Trees. Animals. Listening deeply to anything, be it Taylor Swift’s latest album or the wind in the trees, or a friend telling me something personal and intimate.

Being present to my life makes me happy, and sometimes checking out makes me happy, too! Haha. Life is full of paradox, isn’t it?
