Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Lane.
Hi Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been drawing and painting since i was little. In my early 20’s i got involved in a lot of local pop up art shows and that lead me to the right people. I got the opportunity to start hanging out at a tattoo shop in ventura and got to do my first few tattoos there. After working at a couple shops and experiencing all the highs and lows tattooing has to offer, i finally landed at handmade tattoo in santa paula and i’ve been at that shop for 5 years now
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road. I feel like i lost a whole part of myself in the early years trying to prove to mentors (and myself) that tattooing is what im meant to do. Its not uncommon to do the dirty work to earn your position in a shop. Thats just what you do. But there were ways in which i was treated that were not okay. A lot of stress and dealing with all sorts of personalities. But i wouldn’t be where i am now without any of that and i still appreciate the tattooers that took a chance on taking me under their wing and sharing the things they know about tattooing with me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My style has somewhat changed since i started and i hope to see my style constantly change as i grow with my work. I do mainly black and grey work. I guess you could describe it as “illustrative” i can do a lot of fine line, and love using bold and traditional aspects in my drawings. Recently ive been trying to push flash with a “trippy psychedelic” vibe in a more American traditional influenced style. A lot of people come to me for florals and ornamental/ mandala designs which i dont think i will ever get tired of doing
What are your plans for the future?
I hope do just get more creative and original in my flash drawings. The dream is to keep tattooing flash. Tattooing is never ending learning and trying out different techniques and seeing what works. The last year and a half has been filled with a lot of travel. Ive been tagging along with my friend pops at lots of conventions. I love being able to travel to different places and hope to continue to visit more cities.
