Conversations with Ellen Hancock

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellen Hancock

Hi Ellen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in a small town in Northern California and was scouted by a model agent one day while out prom dress shopping with some girlfriends in San Francisco. I started my career as a model and worked in different cities across the US and Europe. Eventually I started booking more commercial and acting jobs and in 2013 I moved to LA to pursue more projects in TV and Film.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My career has been quite the journey with so many highs and lows. I’ve done everything from modeling for a gas station uniform catalog in Athens, Greece, to working as a mermaid performer in a bar, to guest-starring on a Lifetime series, and working on the Mandalorian. I’ve always tried to treat my career like a marathon rather than a sprint. It’s about failing upwards and continually throwing your name in the hat and having grit. My passion for living a creative life has always just kept me going.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
These days I think most people know me from working with Playboy or being a Mandalorian on the Disney series. Luckily I get to work on a large range of projects so there’s always a lot of variety in what I do. I’ve done a lot of dramatic roles as well as years of improv at UCB and countless commercial projects. I enjoy all kinds of storytelling. Lately as an artist I’m focusing more on building my special skills, like getting a blue belt in jiu-jitsu or re-learning the clarinet, and producing my own projects.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I grew up in the mountains so moving to Los Angeles and adjusting to city life was really hard for me at first. Even now every once in a while I need to sneak away to nature somewhere just to soak it in. It also took me a long time to find a core community of people in this city. I was really naive at first and didn’t know how to navigate the industry and the social scene. I feel like pushing through those tough early years was really worth it though. Now I have so many favorite hiking spots and wonderfully loyal, strange, and eclectic friends I really don’t think I could have found anywhere else. This city has so much to offer.
