Conversations with Elizabeth Toller

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Toller.

Elizabeth Toller

Hi Elizabeth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Spirituality and creativity have served as the foundations of my life’s journey. From a young age, my upbringing in a spiritually inclined family instilled in me the practice of integrating spirituality into my daily life. Encouraged by my family, who valued creativity, I was fortunate to be influenced by my mother, a painter, and my sister, a costume designer to find my true passions.

My journey of creativity began at the age of seven when I began taking dance classes. I explored various dance types, including ballet, tap, and jazz. A defining moment in my dance career was my role as a dancing fairy in the production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” an achievement that was aired on Showtime.

After retiring from the world of dance, I found myself captivated by the allure of photography. This fascination moved me into a new world. After my college graduation and while working in the legal field, I sought a creative outlet by participating in photography workshops in the United States and Europe. These experiences were an inspiration, drawing from the mastery of photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Walker Evans, and Dorothea Lange.

Observing my family and friends embark on their journeys of parenthood ignited a passion within me for portrait photography. This passion caused me to step away from the corporate world and establish my own portrait studio. A decade-plus stint as a portrait photographer left me with a yearning to rekindle my connection with my artistic roots and embrace new photographic challenges. This longing steered me back towards fine art photography.

The time has come for me to balance my creative and spiritual facets. Raised within the Irish Catholic heritage, my intrigue with Celtic Traditions has held me captive. Bringing together these two traditions has uniquely shaped my spiritual voyage, infusing it with depth and meaning. This melding of aspects of my life has led me to explore my medium and psychic abilities enhanced by learning tarot, numerology, and reiki.

While melding spiritual beliefs with creativity, I have been led to begin work on a fine art photography project titled “Life Gone Wrong”, while concurrently writing a book named “The Power of the Personal Project.” A Personal Project entails creating a deep dive into one’s life, pinpointing obstacles, devising strategies to roadblocks or stumbling blocks, and working a plan to find your way around them, over them, or under them. This process kindles inspiration and guides the project’s conception, execution, and presentation, All while fostering new skills, habits, and a sense of enjoyment.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest challenge is balancing a demanding full-time job in the legal field and my commitment to spending time with my family and friends, nurturing my spiritual practice, and managing the relentless pace of life. Managing my time to be able to work on my book and photography project is probably the biggest test of my life. Every day poses the opportunity to find blocks of time to move my life and projects forward, whether it be a few minutes in the morning to meditate, time on my lunch break to type a section of notes into my book, or some time in the evening after work to work on setting up for a photo shoot for my project. Weekends are my best time to block out time for writing and photographing, along with lots of time with family and friends, but most importantly, spending time on my spiritual life. Every day is the dance of time and finding the most meaningful way to spend the time of life.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
As a native Orange Countian, I love calling this place home. When I was a child, Anaheim was pockets of suburbs within a rural county with a cultural mix of Mexican and American gave me a fascinating life experience. Orange groves were still prominent near my childhood home. Life was centered around my extended family and our Catholic community. I was a shy child, so my mother enrolled me in dance classes, and I found my first passion and way to express myself creatively. This began my lifelong journey to live a creative life. After retiring from the theatre world, I attended California State Polytechnic University, Pomona to study Marketing and joined the Chi Omega Sorority. The college experience gave me the tools for life to continue my life of creativity. All the exposure I had in growing up has given me the material needed to live a creative life and to share that awareness with others.
