Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Loya.
Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a self-taught artist, creative designer, and photographer. I started with photography when I was given my first toy film camera. I’ll never forget it was a little Franklin the turtle film camera, and I took it everywhere. I always loved taking pictures of anything I thought looked nice. As I got older, I started drawing and experimenting with art. My grandpa was a painter, photographer, and woodworker, so I got much of my creativity from him. My mom has always been artistic, and I loved all the little DIYS she created. I think seeing her being creative also inspired me growing up. Fast forward to college, I took a photography class and saved up for my first DSLR. The funny thing about that is that I failed that class. I didn’t let that discourage me, and I kept taking pictures and using them to express my love for beauty in the world. I learned Photoshop from photography and started using it to make creative art. I then decided to develop and use all my skills to work with people, help them create art for their brands, and create my own mixed-media art.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think the road has been smooth; I’ve had my fair share of bumps, just like anyone else. I’ll have days when I have to fight being discouraged and the idea that the grass is greener on the other side. The one challenge I’ve always found is comparing myself to other artists; because of social media, it is easy to get caught up in feeling like you’re not doing enough or that what you’re doing isn’t good enough. I’ve come a long way, and as I’ve developed all my skills, I have found it helpful with the negative thoughts that sometimes arise as an artist. For anyone, I think it’s important to focus on your craft and remember that everyone is just as focused on their art. As an artist, I must remember that I am one of a kind, and although many others are doing the same thing, nobody can do it with my style.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a mixed-media artist. My favorite type of art is mixing real-world analog with digital. For example, I’ll take polaroids and, later, in photoshop, add little words or illustrations. I mainly use my childhood as an expression and apply everything I love to my art. Much of what I create is based on music or art I experienced growing up. I also love being able to capture the beauty in everyday life. I am currently working on just creating and perfecting my craft. I’m very experimental, so sometimes a project will pop into my head, and I work through it in any way I can use all the mediums available. I don’t think I have a niche yet because I am so creative. I like to explore all types of mediums, and sticking to solely one would be challenging for me. In 2023, I’ve made it a goal to work with more clients and help small businesses that are also just trying to get their brands out there.
What does success mean to you?
I define success as internal happiness. Once you’re happy with your art and are excited to create more, you know you’ve made it.
