Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. KayLa N. Allen.
Hi Dr. Allen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Dear Mixed Girl, the coaching program within my business Dr. KayLa N. Allen, started as an idea. I wanted to create something that was meaningful and integral for girls and women of diverse backgrounds all over the world. I wanted this group of “mixed” girls to have a space of relatability and understanding, so I took to pen and paper digitally. I started writing letters consistently about topics related to culture, identity, diversity, equity, inclusion, challenges, family, love, and everything that only “mixed” girls and women could understand based on their experiences. The purpose was and still is for people to know that they are not alone and there is a space of empowerment and uplift when they are being challenged by the world around them.
From digital letters, I wanted to share personalized letters with girls and women worldwide. I created a community project and began to “recruit” a few individuals to whom I could write. Throughout this letter-writing process, digitally and through my personalized letters, I knew that there was even more work to be done, as its impact was powerful and life-changing. There was born the Dear Mixed Girl coaching program. This program is centered on facing true identity for tapping into improved impact in the real world and becoming the next version of self regardless of what is faced. This program is for girls (and their parents/guardians) and women of all ages; it is well-tailored.
This program would become something that would change the lives of families, girls, teens, college students, businesswomen, and ladies all over the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Getting to where I am now was not easy, and I know that I will always be reinventing my brand and staying humble in all I do. Some of the struggles along the way have been taking on dual student roles of doctoral student and coaching student, learning how to build out my brand and business from the ground up, and challenging social/societal norms.
I have learned countless lessons since I began the Dear Mixed Girl journey from a business and personal standpoint. These lessons encourage me to evolve my processes further to deliver the best version of myself in my work and actions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Dear Mixed Girl is a coaching program that is centered on girls and women from a diversity, equity, and inclusion standpoint. This program challenges girls and women to look at their identity starting from the outside, then looking inside out, which is so meaningful and life-altering. I am known for being compassionate, delivering a dose of tough love when it is needed, sharing wisdom that is based on life experiences, helping others to tap into their reality, and co-creating real impact so that individuals can lead the lives that they are meant to lead at every season of their lives. Working with girls and their families, I help to create lasting changes in environments and futures. Working with women, I can help to break “glass ceilings,” reclaim power, and tap into true purpose.
Dear Mixed Girl is so different because of the letters, empowerment spaces, unification areas, and continuous evolution of opportunities to shine a light of what makes diversity great and meaningful. I am most proud of what Dear Mixed Girl has grown to be and what it is becoming.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Even though I have used this word in other contexts in this article, I can say that is most important here as an answer to this question: compassion. You can be the most intellectual, loudest, assertive, wealthiest, connected, and educated individual, but if you do not have compassion in your work and how you interact, it will show in countless ways in the long run. However, if compassion is a part of your “foundation” and you work in developing yourself as a business and brand while garnishing other needed skills along the way, you will find yourself in a far better place with real success being a part of your journey.
