Today we’d like to introduce you to DJ Moua James Edmunds.
Hi DJ Moua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Sleeping Dove began with a love story. James and I met later in life, and from the beginning, we loved sharing the same blanket and the sense of connection it gave us. But sleeping close often meant I’d overheat in my midsection, leading to countless sleepless nights. We didn’t want multiple blankets, plugs, or engineered fabrics in our bedding. One morning, I had an idea: “What if a blanket had windows?” I’d worked in apparel production in my 30s, so I knew the right design could offer the simplest fix. I also knew James, with his background in engineering physics, would bring incredible problem-solving skills to the table. When I shared the idea with him and he got on board, I knew we had a real shot at creating our dream blanket. We had a design in mind, but because nothing like it existed on the market, we started with a full patent search and eventually hired a patent attorney. We began our journey knowing little about blanket-making, but learned through prototyping, testing, and working with industry experts. Today, we’re patent-pending and launched our brand in April 2025. We stand for celebrating closeness, well-being, and beautiful sleep—with a modern comforter your favorite grandmother could have sewn for you.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not smooth. It was incredibly challenging to find someone willing to work with us. Our patent-pending status made things even more complicated. Figuring out a construction that worked beautifully was another hurdle. We went through a couple of manufacturers before finding the right one—someone who understood our commitment to creating something high-quality and eco-conscious. And now, we’re navigating the world of social media, learning how to show up and connect—all as a second act in life.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work in operations in the medical device field, with a background in apparel product development. James is in data science and was formerly an attorney.
What sets us apart is lived experience. I grew up in France, lost both parents young, and joined the Navy to serve and heal. I’m proud to have built a meaningful life and career on my own. James left a top law firm in his 30s to raise his children in Italy, prioritizing their childhood over prestige. His greatest pride is seeing them all graduate college.
We’re grounded, open-minded, and focused on what really matters—and that spirit is woven into everything we create.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
We hope readers will stay open to a different way of sleeping. The idea of a comforter with “windows” might sound unusual at first—but once you experience the freedom to cool off just where and when you need to, without giving up comfort or closeness, it changes everything.
And yes, pets absolutely love our comforter too.
