Conversations with Dhruvi Darji

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dhruvi Darji

Hi Dhruvi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Firstly, I would like to start by saying that I never imagined being in the music industry like ever or doing anything nearly music-related as I come from a absolute non-musical background. Although, I have always been intrigued towards the creative fields of art and craft since I was little. My interest in music aroused when I was in middle school as I started attending concerts of international artists who came for tours in my city Mumbai, India. That is where I am originally from. My journey in music begin when I attended these shows and got immensly inspired by the “main character” energy of the “Headlining artists”. I was in awe by the amount of love, respect and support they received by their fans and I knew in that moment that it was the kind of recognition and love I wanted to receive. So, I decided to start learning how to DJ as it was something that caught my attention. I studied the Indian Entertainment industry and market and learnt that there were very few to a little female DJ’s in India, which motivated me a lot to start performing in my early stages of being a. Dj. I started performing in 2019 in Mumbai and eventually started touring in India in different cities until 2023. I have 4 years of experience as a DJ. In this time I also learnt how to produce beats and play the keyboard which helped improve my skillset as an artist. I wanted to take music seriously and pursue a career as an international touring artist ever since 2022. But I felt like I had a lot to learn to pursue it as a career professionally so I decided to move to Los Angeles to learn everything from a Music school called “Musicians Institute” in 2023. I am currently enrolled in the music school and being here I learnt how to sing, write my own music, record, release, promote and market my own music and establish myself as an independent artist! Being in Los Angles I came across some phenomenally talented artists, record producers and music business folks who helped me a lot in establishing myself out here. Currently I have three records called “I Am”, “My Mind” and “Know You Again” which are currently out on all music platforms under the artist name “DROOVYY”. These songs tell the story of a person trying to figure out her life and look at things in a positive perspective and light as she goes about finding the truth of her life, batting between her desires and wants, her relationships, past traumas, heartbreaks and how she found the strength and the bone to find herself and kept working on herself regardless the challenges. She urges and encourages people to do the same as she believes in the value of this message and feels everyone deserves to find their truth and live life in the best way possible.
My biggest message as a creative would be ” You are either the hero or the villian of your story. Be mindful because you made you that protagonist. ”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is smooth and that’s how it’s supposed to be honestly. In my opinion I have had a life full of privileges and I am grateful for it. Not that I was rich or abundant since the start but I have worked hard to improve my craft and most importantly I worked on myself mentally, physically and spiritually, which helped me transform as a human being and see the world and myself in a different light.
In my early years of starting out as a musician I was tied down by the industry standards and societal pressures and was bound to follow a certain pattern to become successful. I soon realized there was no right or wrong way of getting where I wanted to be. I also didn’t want to limit myself to just DJ’ing or just being a guest DJ touring in India. My dream has always been to be the main character because I’ve always had that energy in me and I had that knowledge since the beginning. So, after years of contemplation, trying out different things in my field, gigging around, performing I decided to take that leap of faith and invest my time, money and energy in creating my own music from the scratch. If I did not try singing and writing I would never know I could. At this point in my life, I just believe and know that I need to take those risks and ‘fail faster’. I am a person and the kind of artist that appreciates and embraces the journey more than the destination. I honestly do not have a specific “place” I want to be in my life when I succeed. I just know the way I want to feel and the things that will help me feel that way and be the person I would be proud of! I know it sounds very moral and too much to digest or believe but this what I’m about!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Im a professional DJ with 5 years of experience performing back in my country India as a touring Guest artist. I am also a Songwriter, Lyricist and Singer, so basically an independent artist who does it all!
My main genres as a DJ would be Hiphop, House and Techno music.
My main genres as an Artist/Songwriter would be R&B and Pop.
I am known for making music that is conveyed in a direct manner with lots of elements of relatability, love, human emotions and growth. These would be the main element of my lyrics. I usually write lyrics that come from a real place of experience but it about love, strength, a heartbreak, a trauma, a tragedy, anything. I believe in being completely transparent with my audience.
I think what sets me apart from the artists in this industry is that ” everyone is in a race to make it, to reach a finish line, to be that famous artist or rapper that people worship. I look at music in a completely different manner. Music helps me grow as a person. I dive deep into areas of my life that I never thought I would touch or think about, I grow mentally, physically and spiritually by writing music and narrating that story to my audiences. Music honestly walked into my life right when I needed it the most and the funny thing is I had no intention or desire to become an artist. I just always wanted to become someone I and my parents could be proud of! As an artist, I have no intention of becoming someone famous. I want to be known and renowned for my work, my ethics, my style, my energy. I want to be a happy human being when I grow old. I want to experience the real luxuries of life such as peace, love, tranquility. I am working on attaining these things everyday. I know most Pop culture kids do not want to hear this, but this what I’m about. I ain’t trying to sell myself!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learnt the importance and the value of being a creative! I remember during the COVID-19 pandemic I was back at home doing these “Live sets” On Instagram for my friends and followers. I hadn’t really planned on doing it but every night after dinner, I would find myself spinning on my DJ deck, mixing some sick Hiphop and House tracks and engaging with a lot of people. I got a lot of good reviews at the time, as it was something people needed during those times. And I absolutely love giving people what they need! I learnt to value my craft and polish it everyday for the better!

I cannot wait for my audience to listen to my upcoming singles coming out this year!
