Today we’d like to introduce you to Deion Gill
Hi Deion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
To put it simply, things started making sense really, really early. I’m originally from Boston, MA, where I grew up and started making music with my cousin as early as 12 years old. By the time I was 14, I was writing, producing, recording, mixing and releasing my own music on YouTube from my bedroom in my mom’s house. I had friends that were artists that would come over and would work on music with me, and at a certain point I started to gain a lot of traction on my videos I was putting out. In the summer of 2011, I got an opportunity to come out to Los Angeles for what was supposed to be just a weekend to work in the studio. Long story short, that trip ended up being three weeks long, the next trip was 5 weeks, and now this July will mark 14 years in Los Angeles for me. Through that journey I’ve grown into a man, traveled the country and the world to perform and create, made music with artists I grew up on, and also learned a lot of lessons about life that can only be taught through the experience of persevering through some of my most difficult times. These days I’m still waist deep in my pursuit of my passion, making and releasing music for myself and others, and growing a little bit every day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been a rollercoaster to say the least. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs that I’ve had to reconcile with and make sense of as I’ve grown up. From couch surfing at 19 and 24, to bad business partners, being stuck at a record label, and my own self reflection that had to take place to find the sense of peace I needed to move forward in life. I wake up grateful these days to have overcome so much, but the cost of stepping out into the unknown at such a young age definitely came at the expense of having to painfully learn from my own mistakes as well as the mistakes of people around me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My passion and mission at this point in my life has everything to do with every stage of making music, whether it be for myself or artists I’ve worked with. From producing, writing, recording, and mixing a record, all the way to conceptualizing a full body of work and being that birds eye view to see a project to its finish line. My work is deeply rooted in being a lifelong lover of everything that is music. It’s an entire world for me, and I’m obsessed with the inner workings of it. Something I’m most proud of as a fruit of my labor was being awarded the Curtis Mayfield Scholarship Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame when I was 21. That let me know really early on that I was on the path I was meant to be on, and I haven’t given this life path a second thought since.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
As I’m really stepping into a new era of my artistry and focusing on the music I make for myself, I’m going to be constantly releasing music this year on all platforms for anyone to enjoy. This is music I’ve spent a lot of time digging into myself to bring out of me, and I’m really really proud of it. So with that being said, if you’re reading this, I’ve probable just dropped a new song for you to listen to, and I hope you enjoy it.
