Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Drummond.
Deborah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We would probably need a couple of interviews to get into some of the very cool stories of how I got to where I am today! It has been a 31 years journey of entrepreneurship and exploration. I started off as a very happy cocktail waitress listening to music for my job. I was in a place where people were happy, smiling, laughing, and dancing, a great way to start a career.
Making the decision to move from that industry to the Health and Wellness industry 30 years ago definitely had its bumps in the road. I believe in putting one foot in front of the other, even when I didn’t know how I was going to accomplish what was in front of me. This was the climb. To be an entrepreneur takes an incredible amount of virility. The ability to take risks, a level of uncomfortableness with the unknown, and an innate, deep, and driven belief in oneself to overcome any obstacles. Those attributes come from having every aspect of your entrepreneurial soul tested to the extreme. I had a very, what I would call, spiritual moment, which was a very clear indication that I needed to leave the nightclub and music industry world. This turned into one of the most powerful decisions I have ever made in relationship to career and personal development, and that was falling in love with the Health & Wellness sector. I owned a private health studio for 27 years, worked on 30+ thousand clients, created and formulated over 300 natural products and created direct sales companies across Canada.
All the while I was a pioneer in the mind/body/spirit philosophy spending copious amounts of hours educating people and trying to convince at times that Health & Wellness was an absolutely necessary market. I started in that market when it was a niche and it was hard knocking on the door to get people to listen, to take care of their bodies, to take care of their minds, and to make it a priority in their life. I talked about the use of right products and helped people really understand the ingredients of products they were putting on their body and digesting in their system. I was known as a Professional Hippy who did massive amounts of speaking, teaching and mentoring sessions at many business institutions such as banks, insurance companies, hospitals, women’s organizations as well as one on one clientele. I was sharing the word of preventative health care at a time when that was quite an obscure way to think about one’s health. We come from a place of when we are sick we look to fix ourselves versus when we are healthy, how do we stay healthy. I got to where I am today by having the right people in my life to follow including business coaches, advisors, experts, and people of counsel in my personal and business life. I made a strong-willed DESIRE a very visual and forecasted business PLAN. Finally, constant re-evaluation of the decisions I make, being honest with myself whether they were the right or wrong decision, correcting where I need to correct as much as I can, keeping my vision extremely big, and coming to the place where I can admit that truly I am a Creative who loves to build companies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Has it been a smooth road? That is a rhetorical question to someone that has been in business for 31 years and has had 7 companies! Like anything of duration, it is smooth until it’s not. It’s bumpy until it’s not. Over time, you have so many years of experience that you know the road is the exact way it is supposed to be. The journey is the exact way it is supposed to be. Through experience, you become a preventative player in the world of business. You bank your odds, you look for ways to leverage, you have a stronger/higher level of respect for the power of the moment, you realize that it is not the big stuff that shifts your bank account, it is the continuum and consistency of the small. I like to refer to struggles as ‘learning curves’. Navigating the next level of fundamentals as businesses began to grow, such as filling positions, hiring and obtaining the right person for the job, was an early learning curve. Infrastructure for next-level achievement led to learning curves. In areas like technology, more learning curves! As someone in business for 31 years, I built my business belly-to-belly, handshake-to-handshake, in a time when your word meant something and three signatures documented on a contract were not required. How have things changed? The principles of how people do business and what that means for me, the different forms of marketing, learning how to move from traditional marketing to social marketing, having the right mix/blend for each of my companies, staying steeped in traditional values in my business and yet staying current with trends.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As an Ultrapreneur, to come up with a singular answer for what I do is a challenge in itself. What I have done, and continue to do, is create platforms for people to be able to inspire and motivate others. I have been a strong advocate of supporting people to have success in the profession of Direct Sales and have spent over 30 years with at least one of my companies strongly supporting that industry. I specialize in the mind, body and spirit philosophy of top performance in personal and business development. How I do that is through a line of products and business services that optimize top-performance financial results in people’s businesses. Through taking my classes, joining my masterminds, or working alongside me as a private client, they are able to achieve a new level of financial ability and satisfaction. My media company, Mission Accepted, is known for creating multiple platforms for entrepreneurs to excel in their business and incredible media opportunities, for example our Mission Accepted Podcast and multiple anthology publications.
I am proud of knowing I’ve been a pioneer in the world of women in economics. I’m proud that I’ve been in business for 31 years and haven’t quit. I’m proud of my choice to be an entrepreneurial parent. My kids were able to have a parent that could be home and available for school events and I was able to be a more attentive parent than I believe I would have been had someone else been controlling my time. I am proud of my daughter and my son both choosing an entrepreneurial life. My son, at the young age of 18, is now launching his first company in streetwear and fashion. I believe what sets me apart is I am completely, 100% authentic in my desire to have everyone that crosses my path have a higher level of success in their health or their wealth. People know that, feel that, and appreciate that. I am, to my core, an entrepreneur, and the businesses that I create are spiritually minded, soul-based, and the products and services are of the highest and most exquisite quality.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best about LA is the classic feel around the film industry. The vibrancy of the Hollywood Bowl and all the bands that have played there. The great music and great movies that have come from LA. I love how my son, every time he gets off a plane in LA, puts a very big smile on his face and feels very much at home. It is difficult for me to say what I like least about any country or any city! I don’t tend to focus on but will weigh likes against dislikes. If I LOVE a city, it just means there is more of what I like versus what I don’t. I love the arts, the culture, how LA makes my son feel, and I love the sunshine.
If I would HAVE to say something about LA that I dislike, the only thing I can think of is the traffic. It is a very busy place, and with that comes infrastructure challenges. That’s it!
