Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniela Lugo.

Daniela Lugo

Daniela, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am Daniela Lugo, a bilingual Latina actress and filmmaker. I was born and raised in Mexico City and later founded Lugo Films. My passion for the entertainment industry started at the young age of 6. In 2013, I began my journey in the world of entertainment, immersing myself in the study of acting, filmmaking, singing, and dancing. During my amateur training, I had the opportunity to participate in various musical theater productions, including R&H Cinderella, Pippin, The Producers, Sweet Charity, Evita, among others.

In 2016, my passion for filmmaking was sparked while working on the Oscar-winning film “Roma,” directed by the incredible Alfonso Cuarón. At 18, I took a bold step and moved to New York to pursue a career in acting and filmmaking. I dedicated my time to studying at prestigious institutions such as The American Academy of Dramatic Arts (Class of 2022), Stella Adler (Class of 2019), Broadway Dance Center (ISVP), and Steps on Broadway.

I’ve been privileged to perform at renowned venues like Carnegie Hall in New York City and the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City. Additionally, I had the honor of gracing the stage at the historic Hudson Theatre in Los Angeles. Actively involved in the production of short and feature films through my company, Lugo Films, I collaborate with highly recognized filmmakers in both Mexico and the United States.

Currently residing in Los Angeles, California, I’ve had the opportunity to share the screen with Hollywood stars such as Bella Thorne and JLO, among others. My career has encompassed various roles in theater, television, and the film industry. A significant highlight includes my off-Broadway debut in 2023 with the leading role in the play “Octopus In Its Own Ink.”

In the kaleidoscope of my experiences, I find fulfillment in each role, both on and off the screen. The journey is ongoing, and I am excited to see where the tapestry of my career unfolds next as I strive to bring stories to life and inspire others to chase their dreams with the same ardor that has defined my own artistic odyssey.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey through an acting career resembles a tumultuous rollercoaster characterized by countless peaks and valleys. It defies a structured path to success, often feeling like a voyage into the unknown. I’ve encountered my fair share of setbacks and rejections in pursuit of diverse roles, yet these moments of disappointment have served as invaluable opportunities for self-reflection.

In navigating these turbulent waters, I’ve consciously endeavored to maintain objectivity within myself. My focus has shifted from the desire to impress casting directors or garner attention on social media to a deeper, more profound approach. Each audition has transformed into a personal expedition, a chance to authentically inhabit the fictional world of the characters I portray.

The act of performing, whether through impassioned monologues or immersive scenes, has elicited profound emotions within me. Acting has evolved into a therapeutic outlet, offering solace and introspection throughout my decade-long tenure in the industry. This year, in particular, has marked a pivotal shift in my perspective. I’ve forged a deeper connection to my craft by embracing it for myself rather than seeking external validation.

By prioritizing authenticity and remaining true to both my essence and the characters I embody, I’ve come to realize that my journey in acting transcends mere accolades. It’s about personal evolution, self-discovery, and a steadfast dedication to the art form itself. Success in acting isn’t solely measured by external validation but is intricately intertwined with my growth as an artist and as an individual.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a professional actress and filmmaker with over a decade of experience, I am committed to my work of giving voice to Latin and international talent in Latin America, Los Angeles, and New York through my production company, ‘LUGO FILMS.’ I maintain a strong belief in the importance of representation, and my ideology revolves around the belief that there are no limits to achieving dreams, regardless of race or skin color.

Recently, I have released a short film titled ‘The March of the Penguins,’ a story that delves into the experience of a migrant woman, a mother of a 7-year-old child, with a gravely ill sister. The narrative focuses on the challenging conditions they live in and their desire to migrate to another country in search of a better life. However, the plot also explores the impact on their family members who are left behind. As a filmmaker and actress, I consider it essential to tell such authentic stories, as it is my way of contributing to raising awareness about the reality of many people.

My dream is to continue portraying characters that inspire and promote change in society. As a filmmaker, I aspire to keep producing meaningful stories in both the United States and Mexico, stories that deserve to be heard and that contribute to making a positive impact on the world.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
It’s a fascinating question as I observe significant advancements. Representation on the big screen has seen notable growth in recent years, giving rise to new and diverse stories featuring individuals from different places. The film industry is providing opportunities for actors and filmmakers worldwide. This was unimaginable years ago when we didn’t have platforms like IMDB, Instagram, or portals to apply for agencies and castings. Nowadays, sending auditions and materials is as simple as clicking a button.

I am aware that in five years, new changes will occur, making this process even more accessible. As a filmmaker, by continuing to promote my production company and tell stories, I am excited about the prospect of collaborating with talent from around the world. The industry is undergoing positive changes, opening its doors to everyone, which fills me with enthusiasm as I contemplate the future that lies ahead.
