Conversations with Daniel Scherl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Scherl.

Hi Daniel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
When I was a little kid, my parents gave me a 110 Pocket Instamatic camera, It was so cool. And as soon as I started seeing the world through a lens… I was hooked. This led to a career in photography and writing that’s so far spanned over thirty years and taken me around the world!

But the even cooler thing is that I realized along the way how much I loved meeting new people and talking to them about life.

And no matter what country, culture or city I’ve experienced, I came to understand that we not only have so much more in common than we do differences, but that we’re all, each in our own way, trying to find the answers to the big questions, especially, “what does it mean to be human?”

So I decided to create a podcast and website to explore these things, and it’s called “Memories of a Moonbird.”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, but it’s been GOOD road, even with the bumps and challenges. I unexpectedly lost my father three years ago and that was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever lived through. He was my best friend, and learning to live without your best friend is something I can’t describe well enough in words. Not sure anyone can.

Beyond that, there’s been financial ups and downs, and life ups and downs, but I feel very, very lucky and truly blessed that I am still very much in love with life, love, friendship, photography, writing, music, the arts, and continue to find amazement in the world.

My main goal has always been to live a creative life with as much freedom as possible, be true to myself, and if I can bring a smile to people’s faces and help them while doing that, all the better. I care about life and our place in the Cosmos and I want to continue to do my part in my corner of it all.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I created Memories of a Moonbird to explore life and our stories within it.

My show is ABOUT human stories and it’s a real privilege to do it.

Almost every week, I interview interesting people from all over the world. From a celebrity in Hollywood to a scientist in Siberia, we talk about their hopes, their struggles, what they’ve learned from their life’s journey, and what they think some of the answers to life’s questions are.

And we have a lot of fun along the way. 🙂

The tagline of the show says it all, which is very simply, “Exploring life… one story at a time.”

What makes you happy?
I thought it had changed as I got older, and once I took some time to step away from the rat race after my Dad died, I realized that what TRULY makes me happy has never actually changed.

I was born and raised in Ohio, which I think is a wonderful and fairly humble part of the country. My parents felt it was important for us to experience nature, the arts and to understand the value of the little things. I can’t thank them both enough for that. So what makes me happy? Those little things.

A really nice meal, a good book, a comfy blanket, walking outside in Autumn and feeling the crunch of fallen leaves under your feet, a museum, making love, fresh baked warm bread, laughing with friends, good t.v., playing video games, creating something with my hands, gardening, helping a friend, and for me, a nice, tall glass of ice-cold water. Love it. 🙂
