Conversations with DADA KIM

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dahyun Kim

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been captivated by storytelling. There’s nothing more impactful to humanity than storytelling since the beginning of time. My journey began in high school when I started writing stories. My writing teacher had a profound influence on me by showing me that my thoughts, observations, and feelings were worth sharing with others. This realization sparked a belief in me that everyone wants to be seen, heard, and acknowledged for being loved and worthy of love.

My passion for writing provided an opportunity to evolve into a visual storyteller. Today, I primarily use photography to convey my narratives, but I also incorporate painting and writing to deepen the meanings I wish to express.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t believe any artist would say to have had a smooth journey. Struggle is a natural component of the creative process, serving as indicators that we are pushing boundaries and evolving our craft. Without these challenges, there would be no growth or innovation. And frankly, I believe I still have more to achieve.

One of my main struggles has been finding my own style and voice. Just when I think I’ve found it, a voice in my head tells me it’s not good enough. However, I view this inner voice as an ally, accompanying me in this marathon towards betterment. Together, we aim to improve and grow.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, my primary medium is photography. I am working on a series titled ‘I Sometimes Feel Alone in the Crowd,’ which captures moments from lesser-known towns just outside the vibrant lights of Los Angeles. My aim is to illuminate lives that are rarely given a voice, revealing the beauty and significance of their everyday experiences. I also create art through photography—capturing portraits, fashion, and commercial images to articulate the unique messages of those I photograph. My ability to understand and translate my subjects’ visions into visual narratives sets me apart.
Also, I mix different art forms into my photographs by integrating text and illustrations directly onto the prints. It allows me to introduce additional dimensions and subtleties, enhancing the narrative depth of each image.

Beyond photography, I assist businesses in building their brands, everything from concept and mood to tone and creative direction. Ultimately, it all boils down to capturing an idea, visualizing it, and bringing it to life. That’s what I excel at.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have to say, the pandemic really taught me how to just be with myself. Usually, we’re either forced to be with others or we force ourselves to do it just to keep our minds busy. When all that was off the table, it was tough at first but it really helped me to just sit down and tune into what’s going on in my head. One thing that came out of it? I’ve definitely become more of a homebody.
