Conversations with Crystal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal.

Hi Crystal, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Crystal McDonald — a Laguna Beach–based abstract artist who loves creating vibrant, playful artwork that celebrates freedom, emotion, and self-expression. My paintings are full of bold color, movement, and spontaneity, reflecting my passion for creativity and a happy approach to life.
I started painting in 2017 when my youngest daughter went off to college. What began as a creative outlet quickly became a journey of discovery and personal growth. Abstract art gave me the freedom to experiment, trust my intuition, and express emotion through color and form.
I find inspiration in travel, nature, photography, and my commitment to well-being. Travel opens my mind to new perspectives, nature grounds me, and photography helps me capture fleeting moments that spark new ideas. Through acrylics and mixed media, I explore themes of love, courage, and gratitude—creating art meant to bring light, positivity, and joy to any space.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I started painting later in life with no experience and no idea where to begin. Everything I’ve learned has come from experimenting, exploring, and trusting the process. I’m completely self-taught—learning through trial and error and following my curiosity.
For three years, I traveled without access to painting supplies and didn’t create at all, but the desire to paint never left me. When I returned, I felt more inspired than ever and began taking my art seriously about three years ago. That experience taught me it’s never too late to start something new—and that creativity always finds its way back to you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m an abstract artist who creates expressive, colorful paintings that radiate positivity and emotion. I specialize in acrylic and mixed media works that celebrate themes of love, courage, and gratitude. My art is known for its playful energy and uplifting spirit—each piece reflecting freedom, spontaneity, and happiness.
I’m most proud of how far I’ve come as a self-taught artist who began later in life with no formal training. My journey has been one of persistence and exploration—learning, evolving, and trusting my instincts along the way.
I’m best known for my Happy Heart Series, especially my small 6×6″ and 8×8″ pieces. Each one includes a hidden mini heart within the heart and a happy face on the side, adding a touch of fun and surprise. They can stand on their own or hang on the wall. These hearts symbolize love, positivity, and connection—reminders to find beauty in life’s little moments.

How do you think about luck?
There’s been a mix of both good and bad luck along the way. Starting later in life with no formal background wasn’t easy, and I’ve faced rejections from galleries and exhibitions. Those moments were discouraging at times, but they taught me perseverance and the value of staying true to my passion.
Each setback has helped me grow as an artist and a person. And then there are the wonderful moments—like when someone connects with my art and decides to bring it into their home. That feeling is pure magic and makes every challenge along the way completely worth it.
