Today we’d like to introduce you to Coye
Hi Coye, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was little, I’ve always been drawn to the art of storytelling. And now, I practices that art by capturing stories through a lens.
Yá’át’ééh, my name is Coye. I was born in Tucson, Arizona, but raised throughout the Midwest, with over 4 years of photography experience. I fell in love with photography during my undergraduate years at Haskell Indian Nations University when I was a student journalist for the oldest Native American Student Newspaper; The Indian Leader.
I first started out doing landscape and event photography, then eventually transitioned to portrait and fashion photography. Within the past 2 years I have worked with talented individuals with backgrounds that stretch far across the spectrum.
I been here in Los Angeles for a year. It has started out slow, because now I’m more interested in building and nurturing connections with individuals/organizations that will provide me with unique opportunities to gain knowledge and experience within the upper echelon fashion industry, so then I can use that wisdom to promote American Indian artisans who celebrate cultural preservation and oral traditions.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing is smooth about being a first-generation American Indian fashion icon. A lot of patience was/is had in regards of navigating through the different spaces. One obstacle is always being surrounded by Non-Natives 24/7, the cultural and epistemological differences make this journey extremely lonely. But one thing I love about fashion, is the goal to be different.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My fashion background majority falls within photography, but I have dabbled in modeling, fashion show production, styling, and creative direction.
What I am most proud of living a life that is beautifully filled with art and culture. My passion and dedication to celebrate Indigenous language and culture by curating projects that showcase emerging talents, while highlighting the innovative minds of the artists.
One thing that separates me is my acknowledgment for our ancestors who embodied strength, discipline, and sacrifice. In addition, wanting to use fashion as a tool for wellness, such as youth development and community engagement, but most importantly to celebrate the continuation of storytelling, language, land, and culture.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Traveling around the United States and being exposed to varies languages, places, people, and art.
