Today we’d like to introduce you to CITYBOI BBQ. They and their team shared their story with us below:
CITYBOI is made up of three young men making our mark in the place we grew up, our hometown, Los Angeles, California. As local business owners we represent everything that makes L.A. special and are turning our love of the city and love for BBQ into a brand; CITYBOI BBQ. While L.A. may not have the same reputation as other regions for their BBQ culture (even though we are the godfathers of the backyard bbq boogie), we’ve created a versatile sauce that makes a dent in the culture…that goes on everything. We’ve got a sauce you can’t beat and are willing to put it to the test. You can catch us at local festivals chef shows where we prove that the sauce really does go on, or in everything. Our sauce is what we brand as an L.A. Style sauce that goes on everything. It’s an everything sauce that stands out with its versatility. We provide our unique take on BBQ sauce with a sauce that mirrors the melting pot culture of Los Angeles with a melting pot of flavor in each bottle. The thinness of the sauce allows for it to go on multiple dishes, multiple dishes for multiple cultures. It’s not overpowering, it’s complimentary and distinct at the same time! Versatility at its finest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We have run into situations where things haven’t gone as we expected. i.e., throwing events and not having the desired turnout or financial result. Not getting our sauce in to desired stores. Not getting the views or following that we expected. These have been setbacks, but have not deterred us, instead have allowed us to adjust and get more creative.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Aside from Selling the BBQ sauce, all three owners have “9-5’s”. Daniel Cloyd works at a Broker-dealer in an operations capacity. David Rose works in finance, and Michael Jenkins works as security at a charter school.
Together, we Sell our BBQ sauce where we have a true “brother dynamic”. Michael is more laid back. David and Daniel often argue. We all argue, and we all hang out, we laugh, and we give each other life advice. Daniel comes off more serious, Mike relaxed, and David the party guy.
Other interesting facts: The CITYBOI team has been featured in an article for the Sentinel, David has been part of the Issa Rae’s the Sweet Life show’s cast. We have a YouTube channel with a few shows focusing on our BBQ Sauce.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Daniel and Michael have known each other since age five at Frederick K. C. Price III schools in South Central. Daniel and David met at St. Bernard High School in Playa del Rey. Neither one of us thought about running a business together or foresaw this path.
