Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Augustine
Hi Chelsea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in LA, surrounded by my parents, both involved in the industry in different ways, and my aunt, who owns a salon in Beverly Hills. I’ve always been interested in hair and makeup, but as a kid, I didn’t feel comfortable exploring it too much because I didn’t want to disrupt my ‘tomboy’ image. I’d sneak into my mom’s makeup kit while she was at work and try out different looks from Kevyn Aucoin’s Making Faces book. I also enjoyed helping my friends with their hair and makeup for Halloween.
After high school, I went to college expecting to work behind a desk someday. But after graduating, I quickly realized that wasn’t the path for me. After talking it through with my mom and aunt, they suggested I consider cosmetology school, believing I might be happier working behind the chair in a salon. Once I got my license, I connected with a makeup artist my dad had met on set, and I began shadowing and eventually assisting her. That experience ultimately led me down the career path I’m on today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest challenge I faced was transitioning into full-time freelancing. I was comfortable as an employee, with a steady paycheck, predictable hours, and a clear sense of routine. However, I started to feel bored and uninspired working at a salon. As I built more connections and began assisting people on set, I was able to piece together enough work to make freelancing a successful career.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve focused on mastering the art of creating natural, glowing skin. I’m inspired by enhancing each person’s unique features to celebrate individuality, rather than aiming for a one-size-fits-all look. I also love working with hair’s natural texture— the more effortless and undone it looks, while still maintaining beauty, the more successful I feel.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a kid, I was always trying to make people laugh and be the center of attention. I played sports, did theater and improv, and loved hanging out with friends. I was also obsessed with movies and watching actors on the big screen. It only felt natural to pursue a career that keeps me surrounded by people and sparks my creativity.
