Conversations with Charlie T. Savage

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie T. Savage.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hello there! I’m Charlie T. Savage, a producer, screenwriter and co-founder of Nikky Productions, a boutique production company that specializes in creating character-driven TV series. As a New Orleans native, I feel compelled to shed light on my roots and use my platform to educate and raise awareness for the Southern Creole, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ communities. My life’s work has been dedicated to developing exciting and entertaining visual literature that uniquely showcases the black female experience. I make sure that all the projects I’m involved with draw attention to vital but often overlooked topics. In my free time, I enjoy voice acting and spending time with my two handsome sons, Ja’Mauri and Jazir, as well as my adorable goddaughter, Elon.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although it may appear as though I have always been on top of things, I must admit that this has not been the case. Reaching my current position was difficult, but not for the reasons one might imagine. While some individuals may struggle with receiving numerous rejections, my problem was that I struggled with telling myself “no.” I would take on far more than I could manage, all to maintain a sense of importance. This ultimately broke me down. I found myself in a state of mind where I felt as though I had failed, and then the imposter syndrome would creep in because I wasn’t truly living in my purpose.

Instead, I was just taking on many small projects that wouldn’t ultimately amount to anything substantial. My greatest struggle was learning to slow down and comprehend what my true purpose was, then selecting projects that would lead me to my ultimate goal. Living in Los Angeles is particularly challenging because there are many opportunities if you know where to look. My problem was that I was looking everywhere. My advice to aspiring creatives is to understand your dream and vision and focus entirely on that. Block out as many distractions as possible and do not take on more than you can handle at once.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a creative and visionary, I bring to life the conversations and memories I’ve shared with people from all walks of life, whether they be friends, enemies, family, or strangers. I believe that lessons can be both serious and entertaining, and I strive to develop projects that showcase not just the struggles but also the achievements of the BIPOC community, members of the LGBTQ+ family, and creole women.

As someone who lacked the foundation to read when I was younger, I had to learn valuable life lessons from the TV screen. The 90s sitcoms I watched taught me these lessons in half-hour sessions, and I looked up to the creative people who were able to guide me. Now, I want to be a role model for young girls who may have faced similar challenges to the ones I faced as a child.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am always looking to collab on projects that support my purpose. Connect with me on Instagram @Charlie.T.Savage or visit my website at www.Charlie-Savage.com and drop me a line.
