Conversations with Carli Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carli Wright

Hi Carli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Music City (Nashville) to a musician and an accountant, so naturally, I grew up to be an overzealously pretentious multi-hypenate. I’ve been singing since I could talk and then fell in love with getting to just talk on stage too when I was 8. I moved to the City of Angels at 13 and have been chasing down acting, music making, and writing ever since.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If this quest mirrors the Hero’s Journey, I’ve spent many different seasons in the Refusal of the Call. I graduated high school early and spent the formative 16-22 years lost in a sea of missing rites of passage, spent another stint from 25-28 grappling with thankfully escaping the concept of joining the 27 Club all to find myself now the absolute happiest I’ve ever been in the pursuit of my dreams. I’ve begun finding my people over the past year or so, and it’s been nothing shy of marvelous.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m vaguely known around town for throwing complex lyrics over easy alt-folk chords in LA indie music scene, acting in experimental/narrative-driven films, and bringing a creepy-creature version of Lavinia to life in an 80s inspired Shakespeare mashup horror play called Titus Kills.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have to start this block with a huge nod of gratitude to my mother for taking the leap and moving out here when I was 13. It’s been an honor and privilege to grow up around the entertainment industry and watch how it has changed so much.

I’ve had several epic rounds of agents and managers go to bat for me while I worked to find out what kind of artist I wanted to be.

I also have a band of musicians far more credentialed than me that continue to inspire me to be better.

And honestly, the team over at Day for Knight Productions gifted me the wildest role of a lifetime in the aforementioned Titus Kills that got me out of my head and literally let me live out the acting cliché of being a “tree” and, forgive the pun, let me return to my theatre roots. The group of people I’ve come to know from doing that show have become close friends and collaborators even in other spheres of work.
