Conversations with Capt. James Stovall V

Today we’d like to introduce you to Capt. James Stovall V.

Hi Capt. James, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I got kicked out of high school, dropped out of college and somehow I’m here. No degree, no handouts, just dedication to my craft and great family support that pushes me daily.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the idea is to make it smoothly over roads that at times can be challenging.

It’s been a journey, I’ve played football in junior college, had multiple knee surgeries, broken bones, made attempts to go pro that didn’t go how I wanted, went to school just to get financial aid, tried to do music, enrolled in an art institute to study advertising, drew caricatures at SeaWorld, dropped out of school, and eventually found my way into an artist residency and have been grinding as a creative ever since. A multiple of personal things have taken place also, but I wouldn’t be me without a little road rash around the edges.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in monochromatic and black and white work. I flow seamlessly between mural and canvas work. What sets me apart from others is that I don’t worry about what sets me apart, I go about my work and stay locked in my own lane. I found being concerned with others doesn’t always help you produce the best work, so I keep my head down with intentions of making great work and forever growth.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Dedication, work ethic, a willingness to do, and the ability to have balance.
