Conversations with Candice Belton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Belton.

Hi Candice, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I kind of stumbled into my place in life. A majority of it was spent feeling like an aimless drifter. I had an eclectic assortment of jobs since before I moved out on my own at 17 ranging from service industry work, clinical medical work, and eventually experiencing my first desert camping festival where I had a life-altering experience of feeling a sense of unsought belonging in a nature environment that was as rugged as I was. That was the first time I had ever felt like I was “welcomed home” not only by ways of reconnection with nature but also through being accepted by a genuine community of individuals who were living proof in the belief that one’s being is enough within itself. I reconnected to creative channels within myself that allowed me to express previous challenging life encounters and transmute it into a source of hope for things better than I’ve known. I began an ongoing art project, including mediums of poetry, music, and photography on my Instagram page. Ever since my early 20s of getting bit by the “festival bug” and connecting with a new sense of community, I knew meaningful conscious events of this sort is what I wanted to facilitate so that more people could experience what I had. I currently site manage for multiple venues in DTLA when I am not collaborating with festivals or privately assisting others seeking their perfect space. I have a passion for collaborating with other creatives, genuinely learning of others’ life experiences, and being able to connect people together so that they are closer to fulfilling their life path calling and vision.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, if anything, I never had one to tread down. Because I came from a fractured home life at an early age, I had consistently been at war with myself and my sense of self-worth–which led to me living life by compressing myself into something small because I had constantly felt like I was always trying to catch up with my own shadow while running in shoes several sizes too large for me. I had to learn through an almost inverted way that I too, was allowed to take up space and that my experiences were not only gaping wounds for me to suffer with but that if I learned how to tend to my pains, I could in the very least have something to offer to kindred spirits I met along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I would not lock myself into one set of mediums when it comes to any form of self-expression when considering myself a creative. If I had to say what I specialize in, that would be an ability to truly get to know a potential collaborator or client genuinely and if our visions align, pulling from my pool of resources and network that I’ve grown over the years of acting as a liaison between artists, vendors, venues, and production teams. I’m most proud of my tenacity and gritty curiosity to help breathe life into others’ visions of creative endeavors and projects they’ve held near to their hearts. What sets me apart from others is feeling a humbling sense of content knowing that I am a part of another’s process in fulfilling their purpose and supporting a dream.
