Conversations with Brittany Charlotte Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Charlotte Smith.

Hi Brittany, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Ever since I could remember, I loved performing. Some of my earliest memories are on a stage at a recital doing very amateur jazz. To be fair – I was 2, so my hand-eye coordination was quite novice. After that, I begged my parents to put me in every singing and dancing class which led me to musical theatre. I loved it so much I ended up going to college for it! Being able to act, sing and dance with an ensemble of people is absolutely magical. I started doing that professionally out of college. I did a few plays and musicals and eventually found my way to film and tv. Now I’ve worked on multiple films such as “The Naughty Nine” for Disney + and “The Wedding Rule” (both premiering this year!), on tv with CBS’s “According To Kids”, a bunch of commercials, and had the privilege of being part of Second City Toronto’s House Company!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being in any creative field is challenging. You are constantly putting yourself out there and there is a lot of rejection… So you have to be resilient. If you can find gratitude for how much you’re improving and how far you’ve come, it helps to stay focused. Which is sometimes one of my biggest struggles, remembering ‘progress, not perfection’. It’s about the journey. If you can’t have fun on the journey… it will be hard to come to terms with there being no destination. You will always be a work in progress.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
That’s so sweet! Thank you! I’m a Canadian-Macedonian actor, singer and dancer who trained at Toronto’s The Second City and was cast in their House Company. I am currently dividing my time between Los Angeles and Toronto. I’m most excited about the projects that are premiering this year, including “The Naughty Nine” on Disney+ this December and “The Wedding Rule” this spring/summer. Other projects you may have seen me in: I Won’t Let You Go (Lifetime), A Recipe for Joy (It’s a Wonderful Lifetime), Suits (NBC), or as a series regular on the CBC series According to Kids.

I’m also a writer and producer, my award-winning short film “The Care Giver” is currently finishing its festival run, and this past weekend won ‘Audience Choice’ at the BlackBird Film Festival. My new project “Untitled Porn Project” is a comedy-mockumentory short film that is currently in edits which I wrote and star in. It’s directed by Gavin Michael Booth and it’s going to be absolutely ridiculous and I can’t wait to share it.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
At this moment some of the most important lessons I’ve learned would be;

Don’t wallow in your mistakes. Do celebrate your wins. If you fail, learn, and move on quick! Don’t punish yourself. It just holds you back. Also, find time to celebrate your wins. Those don’t come by as often as we wish, and you deserve to acknowledge them!

Stay malleable. In this industry, there are a lot of things out of our control. Be prepared to let go of all your ideas of how something is supposed to be.

Don’t give up on yourself. It’s easy to throw in the towel when things get hard, but that’s where the best personal growth lies, and that’s where the magic is.
