Black Market, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Our story started as a group of friends just making music and processing a post-pandemic life in Santa Monica. Shout out to the tree house. We took a photo one day, recorded a song, and decided to keep it going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a journey learning to develop together as an ensemble. We have taken great care to preserve our friendships as we navigate these waters. We fight for opportunity in a sea of artists with little support, so it hasn’t been easy, but learning and growing together as friends has been rewarding. The biggest struggles I believe we have faced would be communication as a team, compromise, and performance opportunities from bigger venues. Club owners are difficult in LA and are notorious with not getting back to you, so being consistent with that has been trying.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Pulsing from the nerve center of The Los Angeles Rock scene, Black Market offers a fresh and fearless take on the Rock sound. Their musical vibe blends rock and metal with a multitude of styles and influences presented in electrifying fashion they call Thrash Jazz. The group constantly challenges the musical status quo in an effort to present something unique and exciting for their listeners around the world. Black Market features Malachi Whitson (Drums and Vocals), Jake Richardson (Guitar and Vocals), and Shahab Shivaei (Bass) Henry Gross (Lead Vocals).
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
We all have very diverse upbringings. There are four of us. Two are from Corona, one from Santa Monica, and one from the Bay Area. Our influences were all very different and unique so bringing them together has made a very unique sound.
