Conversations with Bert Youn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bert Youn.

Bert Youn

Hi Bert, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I work in the animation industry as a writer/director. Being interested in other fields like graphic design, product design, architecture and furniture, etc. I always had the urge of having another creative outlet that wasn’t just animation. The obsession of finding well-designed, timeless, and functional products led me to put together a store that could share the things that I was into.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The Good Liver was a passion project that started on the side of my daytime job. I did not have the proper time or budget to achieve the things that I envisioned originally. Designing the logo, sourcing products, taking photos, designing the store furniture, etc… From A to Z, everything had to be done by myself with the very little side money I had.

Starting from an online store with no money to advertise of course leads to disappointing results. It was a super slow process to open the physical shop and get to where we are now. The struggle of keeping the faith in the business and consistently investing the time and money felt very unpromising, but I had to do it. Though we still have a long way to go, but I’m proud to know that we’re finally being recognized and appreciated by our peers.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an animator/writer/director working in the animation industry. I’ve worked at places like Pixar, Disney, Netflix, Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon, etc. I’m mostly known for the work I’ve done on Adventure Time, We Bare Bears, Battle Kitty, and Over the Garden Wall which I’ve won a Primetime Emmy for.

While being obsessed with design and crafts, my passion lies in story-telling which is why The Good Liver focuses on the story and history behind the objects we showcase.
