Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Masselink.
Hi Avery, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Avery Masselink is a Canadian-European actor with roots as diverse as her range. Born in Squamish, British Columbia and raised between Dublin, Ireland and cities across Canada, she brings a layered perspective to every role she takes on. With a Dutch family background and a strong sense of identity, Avery relocated to Los Angeles in 2019 to formally train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, where she developed a sharp technical foundation and a strong command of classical and contemporary performance.
Now represented by The Characters Talent Agency in Canada and The Wayne Agency in the U.S., Avery is steadily building a body of work that reflects her focus, adaptability, and deep respect for the craft. Off-camera, she’s grounded by a love for the outdoors, writing, reading, and staying connected to her family and roots. Her career is marked by discipline, range, and a quiet intensity—an actor to watch as she carves out her space in the industry.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Raised in a financially struggling household, she watched her parents work multiple jobs and return to school—sacrifices that eventually opened doors for her to pursue professional swimming and, later, acting. Despite personal loss and the challenges of a fractured family, Avery remained focused, moving to Los Angeles in 2019 to train at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Now represented by The Characters Talent Agency (Canada) and The Wayne Agency (U.S.), she continues to build a career grounded in resilience, craft, and authenticity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an actor who’s passionate about emotionally grounded storytelling. I’m drawn to roles that explore human complexity—grief, joy, resilience. I try to bring honesty, humour and nuance to every performance. What I’m most proud of is how I’ve stayed rooted through everything, especially the challenges I faced early on. I care deeply about connection—my family, my friendships, and the people who’ve shaped me.
Traveling and living around the world gave me a deep respect for different cultures and the stories that people carry. Hearing those stories, and learning how universal some experiences and emotion’s are, is what made me fall in love with acting in the first place. I think what sets me apart is that I lead with empathy. I don’t just want to play a role—I want to understand it, live it, and give it back in a way that resonates.
How do you think about luck?
Luck has definitely played a role in my life, but I see it less as random chance and more as timing meeting preparation…and of course my endless time spent manifesting. There have been moments where things didn’t go my way—setbacks, losses, family struggles—that felt like bad luck at the time. But those challenges pushed me to work harder, to stay focused, and to keep growing.
On the flip side, opportunities have come when I was ready to take them, whether it was moving to LA or meeting brilliant people in the film industry that wanted to help move my career forward. I think that’s a kind of luck, but it’s really about being persistent and open. I also believe that building strong relationships—whether with friends or collaborators—creates the kind of support network where luck can find you.
So, luck matters, but it’s the mindset and resilience behind it that make the difference. I try to stay grounded and keep putting in the work, knowing that the “luck” that counts most is the one you earn.
