Today we’d like to introduce you to Assaad Yacoub.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my filmmaking journey in 2010 when I went to film school where I got my BFA. I later got my MFA in filmmaking and ended up selling my thesis feature film Cherry Pop to Netflix. After that, I got into directing music videos. I currently have directed 54 music videos in the last five years. Today I’m working on a few big commercial projects that will be out soon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I started my career, I got a lot of opportunities right away because of my feature film so that helped me out a great deal. There are always obstacles in a career though and till this day, I find myself hustling for the next gig I think the biggest obstacle I face is trying to grow and level up as a director that’s always a challenge trying to prove that you can handle a bigger budget or ideas but it’s also what makes me work harder to get there.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a director full time I love y job because it allows me to be creative and I love bringing my ideas to life. I would say I’m known for being the go-to drag music video director. I’ve directed over 45 of them and have worked with the top drag queens in the world like Bob The Drag Queen, Trixie Mattel, Jinx Monsoon, Alaska, Mo heart, Monet X change and the list goes on. I honestly can’t pick a specific project I’m the most proud of as a whole I always tend to love the last thing I directed most so that would be a hard one to answer. I believe what sets me apart from other directors is my ability to make my sets fun for everyone to be on but at the same time, I get the job done most people who work with me for the first time always mention that they would love to come on my sets again and I’m talking about crew and cast.
