Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley Yang.
Hi Ashley, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started Ten Fourteen because it was, quite simply, just a hobby. Another craft I wanted to try. Another DIY project. Just another way to stay creative and have fun. I’ve always loved being in creative spaces creating things and trying new ideas.
When I crocheted my first bag, I felt this quiet sense of pride, like “Wow, I actually made this.” That one project sparked something. I became obsessed buying yarn in every color, testing new patterns, and feeling more connected to the process each time. It wasn’t until friends started asking to buy my bags and strangers stopped to compliment them that I took a small step toward selling. After my first “drop,” the support I received gave me the encouragement to keep going. One small step turned into another, and eventually, it became something of my own. I’m still learning, still growing, but what keeps me grounded is this: handmade still matters. Ten Fourteen is my reminder that slower, more intentional things still hold value.
The meaning behind the name Ten Fourteen is simple… it’s my birthdate! The “X” logo on the front of each bag represents the Roman numeral for ten. With that same yarn, I add a small crocheted detail inside the bag that, if you look at it in an abstract way, forms the Roman numeral for fourteen. I’m always finding meaning in small details, and this is just one way I bring a personal touch to every piece.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a really positive experience so far. I wouldn’t say there have been major struggles moreso a learning curve, especially when it comes to social media. I’ve enjoyed figuring out the process, though putting myself out there publicly has definitely been a little nerve-wracking. At the same time, it’s been exciting and rewarding to step outside my comfort zone and grow through it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ten Fourteen is the business I’m currently focused on. I hand crochet each bag myself which means every piece is made slowly and intentionally. What really sets Ten Fourteen apart is the material I choose to work with. The yarn I use is made from recycled cotton. It’s eco-friendly, completely dye-free, and produced without toxic chemicals. Because the yarn is recycled each bundle of yarn has subtle variations so even when two bags are made in the same color, the shades can differ slightly. That means every bag is truly one of a kind.
The process isn’t about perfection or mass production. Every Ten Fourteen bag ends up a little different which is what makes each one special
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was naturally positive and people oriented. I’ve always enjoyed helping others and bringing people together, whether that meant hosting, organizing, or simply being someone people could rely on.
