Conversations with Anuar Bakhytbek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anuar Bakhytbek

Hi Anuar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After finishing school, I was eager to enter the film industry. However, my father, a former military man, envisioned a different path for me and sent me to military service. Life there was challenging, but I recognize the benefits and life experience it provided. Upon my return, I discovered that I had been unknowingly enrolled in law school for a year. My father’s plan was for me to receive higher education and quickly advance in the military ranks, ensuring a stable career. I understand his intentions; he wanted to secure my future. However, I knew I didn’t belong there—I am a creative person.

I convinced him of my true passion and pursued a bachelor’s degree in directing in my homeland, Kazakhstan. After graduation, my next goal was to challenge myself further by moving to Hollywood. I understood the immense competition, but I was determined. The magnitude of my ambition struck me as I gazed at Los Angeles from the airplane window.

Currently, I am studying producing at the New York Film Academy. This decision was not easy, but it aligns with my strengths. I prefer taking care of the team rather than focusing solely on the shot. I love collaborating with experts and learning from them. My skills in communication and problem-solving are my greatest assets on set.

In addition to my passion for cinema, I have always been fascinated by video games and dream of working in the gaming industry. During my time here, I have met many of my idols and industry professionals. Though I have yet to fully showcase my talents, I believe my best days are still ahead.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Of course, the road was not smooth. Difficulties arose at every stage.

Preparing for the trip was particularly challenging. I spent a year learning the language and passing exams to reach the necessary level. I also worked hard to master my specialty so I wouldn’t feel embarrassed in front of my colleagues.

I often hear from those who support me that difficulties are only visible to those who are afraid to overcome them. This helped me not to give up and to keep moving forward despite all the obstacles.

There were also challenges in adapting to a new country and culture, as well as the need to prove my competence and talent in an industry with incredibly high competition. However, each challenge only strengthened my determination and helped me grow both professionally and personally.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m currently in the early stages of my career, with two short student films in my portfolio. While I may not have anything that sets me apart just yet, I am committed to growing and developing my skills. In the future, I aim to create outstanding works that reflect my vision and creativity.

One of my key goals is to showcase my culture and traditions through film, just like many of my compatriots. I dream of contributing to the development of domestic cinematography, bringing stories from my homeland to the global stage. My aspiration is not only to succeed individually but also to elevate the representation of my culture in the film industry.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that you need to be bold when it comes to your future. Although this isn’t naturally who I am, I strive to embody this mindset. Seizing opportunities and breaking through doors with determination is essential to achieving your dreams. The world doesn’t hand out success freely; everything is earned through persistence and confidence.
