Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Chambers
Hi Angela, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began in North Eastern North Carolina, in a small rural town, where my father’s vinyl collection ignited my passion for music. I grew up watching my dad and brother play guitar, and my mom also played piano. I was drawn to the world of melody and lyrics which is how I got started with singing as a backing vocalist in my brother’s band.
After graduating from film school in Wilmington, NC, I ended up landing a speaking role in a film out in San Francisco, which inspired me to drive across country where I ended up living for a year before moving back to the east coast. I had always wanted to live in New York, so I decided it would be a good time to try it out. Soon after my move to the Big Apple I auditioned and landed a role as a singer/performer for an Italo- disco band called “Dust”. At the time I was working as a fashion model in the garment district along with balancing a couple of jobs and touring Europe with my band. We released two albums, one on Brooklyn’s Low Life Inc label and the other being on Berlin’s Mannequin Label. On the second European tour, I bought a one-way ticket to Europe, leading to an artist residency in Berlin in 2013. By 2014, I embarked on a solo venture during my artist residency at the Berlin art collective, Neu West, which was the inspiration behind my first solo EP under the moniker “AC Meadows” This led me to explore new collaborative territories, including work on TV/film scores with Dirk Dresselhaus of Schneider TM. From 2015, I embarked on a new band project performing and writing songs as a duo called ‘Waking Dreams’ with fellow musician, Jason Letkiewicz. Our debut album ‘Askew’ was released in June 2020 followed by our sophomore album “Sliding Lines” in April 2023. I played with various other musicians and artists during my time in Berlin, and was also writing songs and performing with a band called “Surrealia” during Covid times. The band split and the songs were never released due to internal conflicts among band members. After feeling burned by egos and industry sharks, I decided it was time to focus solely on my solo career. I started feeling a bit homesick, and was traveling back and forth from Berlin to the States a lot. In 2023, I traveled to Nashville to work on my Solo EP together with Canadian producer, Douglas Romanow. In 2024, I made a move to Los Angeles, where I am currently collaborating with a Producer here on some upcoming tracks.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My artistic road has not been a smooth one. This year I reached a crossroads where I could see my past, present and future diverging, and it felt chaotic to say the least. I would wake up drenched in sweat and uncertainty of how my life would unfold. It is always nice to feel that you have options, although sometimes life presents you with what you need to survive. I was faced with making major decisions and the ones that could change your life forever. It can be quite daunting as an artist to constantly long for understanding, stability and confidence to keep moving forward. The main struggles I have faced so far in my career have been dealing with other people’s egos and not letting that stop me, having to rely on others sometimes to make things happen, knowing when to turn things off and on, and having the courage to continue even when you suffer a burnout phase. Sometimes I am not even certain of how my whole creative process will go, but to just keep throwing ideas and songs into an abyss of hope, dreams and luck.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am mostly known for my voice as a singer/songwriter/performer/Actress and voice artist. I recently signed a Voiceover contract with Commercial Talent Agency here in LA. As of recent, I am most proud of the EP I recorded together with Douglas Romanow as part of my Nashville Tapes, and I am also currently collaborating with a couple of producers here in LA. My upcoming single “The Key” was just released on March 5th. My inspiration for writing songs comes from my life experiences as an aritst and I am currently working on my solo album.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
As an independent artist, risk taking has become a huge part of my life. Some of the biggest milestones or major risks I have taken along the way have been buying a one way ticket to Europe, starting a new life there and living for a decade in Berlin, Germany. I also have to take risks all the time financially when it comes to my music and investing in songs that I am not even sure if they will go anywhere. Upon moving back to the States last year and re-locating to Los Angeles, it was quite a culture-shock and overwhelming for me. Getting back to the roots and re-discovering my American identity as an Artist, which offered me a diffferent version than the expat version of myself, which forced me to re-invent myself again. Many people would be terrified at the thought of starting over again at my age, however I have been able to embrace it for what it is and realize that hey, you have not been married three times or divorced with kids. I remind myself, I have zero baggage, nothing tying me to anyone or anywhere specific and it’s OK to start over again and it’s all part of my journey as a musical artist. It gives me fuel to write about.
