Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Prigo.
Hi Alexis, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started comedy in 2014. I had taken a few classes at The Groundlings, thinking that would be my niche’ but I wasn’t that good at it. There was a guy in my class who did stand up and mentioned it to me one day. So as a gift my dad enrolled me in Bobby Oliver’s comedy workshop, and I spent weeks shaking with fear and questioning my existence. Joke writing and being funny with friends are two very different things. Luckily, by the end of the workshop, I felt more confident and had my first show at Flappers in Burbank. After that performance, I knew this had to be my life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
In the beginning, a majority of my struggle came from fear. I was fearful of any sort of success because that meant there was no turning back. It didn’t come from a place of laziness but more that this dream could actually come true. Success is terrifying but I think I’m obsessed with that feeling. Now, most of my challenges come from my personal life. It’s hard to maintain relationships when you want something so badly and it’s a never-ending struggle to find balance.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a stand-up comedian and actress. My proudest moments have been when I can hear someone in the audience say, “Oh my gosh! Yes girl!” after a joke. Relating to the crowd means I’ve done my job. It feels like I helped a friend out. In the last two years, I’ve started to look at comedy from a strategic standpoint and that may separate me from others. You’re not given a comedian handbook when you start so establishing a game plan is valuable to the process.
