Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Oren.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in music at around age seven. At first, I started with guitar lessons while living in Chicago. At around age fifteen, I started recording music on Logic and set up a music studio in my attic. From age 15, I was recording guitar loops over a small Korg drum machine and started learning new instruments to accompany my beats. It wasn’t until age 17 that I started singing over beats. At first, it really sucked, like badly. Nevertheless, I was fully obsessed with music so the quality didn’t matter. I started really taking music seriously around age 19 and have had my sights set ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In any creative field, there are many blocks, and you learn to get the hang of tackling them. A big hurdle is consistency, I’m someone who’s always been easily distracted. The best solution is to diversify the tasks at hand. For example, if you don’t feel like making music make promotional content or videos to fuel your career. Other hurdles in music can exist within relationships and the way people move whether good or bad. Most importantly, it’s important to become self-sufficient in as many ways as possible to add to your own productivity. Any way you look at it, there will always be hurdles and rewards it’s just important to remember it’s all part of the process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My specialty lies within singing, producing, sound design, and guitar. What sets me apart is not necessarily what I do but how I do it. I like to always pride myself on being unique, the best way to explain is to listen to the music itself.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Mentoring for everyone is different, I never had one mentor. Networking definitely taught me a lot about music and the correct moves to make. My advice from networking is just to let everything happen naturally, if it’s forced it’s not meant to be. Most times, you can catch a vibe if your respectful and appreciate the people who give you the time of day.
