Conversations with Aishwarya Chandramohan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aishwarya Chandramohan.

Hi Aishwarya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I went to the Academy of Art University in San Francisco for Game Development in 2013. I even did my master’s in concept art in 2018. But as I went through the two degrees I realized that games was not where my heart lied, it was always in animation. So in 2020 I finally had some time off to myself and decided to teach myself how to storyboard for animation. I started by boarding a 12 min pilot I wrote with a friend, and after that, I’d keep practicing by making short music videos. I ended up getting a mentorship with Kristal Babich through Women in Animation which really helped to push me further and by 2022, I got my first story job in animation! I was Lead Revisionist for Wildbrain!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been a long road getting to where I am and it still feels like there’s a long way to go. Majoring in games, I always felt like a fish out of water, as it was difficult to relate to my peers. I was also being taught some toxic art habits that I later had to spend time unlearning. But today, I’m so much happier finally doing what I love!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m primarily a story artist for animation, but since I have a background in concept art, I also do character design for animation from time to time. I guess I’m known for my cute style, clear compositions and my speed. When it comes to boarding speed is one of the most important skills you can have in your arsenal!

What matters most to you?
The thing that matters most to me is making sure that me and the people around me are able to continue to keep the passion for animation alive while still taking care of ourselves. It’s so easy for us to work ourselves to the bone because we love to do what we do while neglecting our own health, but it’s so important to keep checking in with yourself and taking breaks to ensure longevity in this stressful industry!
