Conversations with Vince Gonzales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vince Gonzales.

Hi Vince, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
VINPIX Clothing

I love finding good design in the ordinary AND appreciate quality clothing. Not finding the perfect jacket to wear, I created something for myself. Vintage military field jackets became the perfect canvas to feature my archive of graphics and embroidery ideas. VINPIX clothing features one of a kind custom embroidered and printed vintage repurposed jackets, messenger bags and belts.

Photography, Bubble Room Sessions
I developed the Bubble Room sessions just before COVID started from a desire to create new photoshoots that could be fun and engaging for my clients. I got the idea after noticing how little kids lit up whenever they played with bubbles and thought it would be exciting to catch that same bright energy on camera. My happy discovery was that all my adult friends wanted to get in the act as well. So far, I’ve photographed kids, adults, art and even a puppet in a magical swirl of bubbles.

The Creative Podcast
I had a simple desire to hang out with my friends and colleagues and discover more about their creative side. The Creative Podcast allows me to get inspired by those around me while sharing unique talents and skills to a wider audience.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth? No. Exciting? Yes. It’s been a personal progression, challenging my own skill and confidence. Many trials and failures but ultimately, I gained confidence when my current collection seems to strike a chord with creatives looking for high quality, one of a kind pieces. I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface and am excited about creating the next new one.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a photographer, I specialize in creative portraits, fashion and editorial. As a designer, I specialize in customizing vintage and repurposed items.

Hopefully, I’m known for creating fun and collaborative experiences with my clients.

I’m blessed to be surrounded by positive and empathetic creatives. I mostly inspired by my wife, Donna Grillo, who is a gifted casting director and coach in the voice over world.

I get a thrill finding beauty in the ordinary. This point of view influences everything I create.

What were you like growing up?
I was a shy kid, creativity and artwork were my main interest. My Mom was a big influence who had the ability to take everyday items around us and make decorations that added light to our home. Even simple gift-wrapped packages where so unique- you didn’t want to open them. I do my best to carry on those small gestures.

I came of age in South Central Los Angeles in the 80’s with the cocaine epidemic exploding and gang culture at it’s height. In the neighborhood there wasn’t always talk about bright futures or discussions of art. It wasn’t until the 90’s when I was working as an assistant at MTV and saw the NWA billboard on Sunset Blvd that I realized people create, no matter what the obstacles are. Here were local kids from the 213 competing with some of the biggest acts in the world! Making that connection reinforced my instinct to visually celebrate the unexpected.
