Conversations with Vanessa Amador Sanchez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanessa Amador Sanchez.

Hi Vanessa, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m 25 years old, Married, with two beautiful children. Two years old Alejandro Israel and seven months old Lucy Marie. I create custom cakes and cupcakes with a little touch of me in them. Baking has always been one of my favorite things to do aside from cooking.

When the holidays came around, it was an extra special moment we spent with my grandma in the kitchen baking and decorating desserts. I’ve always had a sweet tooth, sweets are my weakness. I started baking my grandma’s pineapple upside down cake and apple pie. As we were Indulging in the delicious apple pie, My husband said to me, ”why didn’t you become a baker?” And it just hit me. I was eight months pregnant with my daughter when I decided to take a basics baking course online. It took me about two weeks to finish the course, then my baking and decorating journey began. With many failed attempts, I kept going. I got discouraged so many times, but I kept practicing because I honestly just loved doing it. Every time I baked and decorated I felt at peace. A friend from high school asked if I was taking orders and I said, “I’d like to eventually,” and she said “can I order a cake from you?” And that’s when I decided to make a business and start taking orders. I was so excited! I had my daughter May 12th, 2020.

Then, May 13th, 2020 my grandpa passed away. I was still in the hospital recovering from the surgery. My heart shattered into a million pieces, my grandpa was a father to me, he meant so much to me. My grandpa was a successful business owner, along with my grandma. They owned an asphalt and paving company called Sanchez Bros. Paving located in Torrance also. My grandpa and grandma always taught me to work hard to be successful in life. They taught me how much the little things in life matter and to always believe in myself. Seven months later, I am in the process of being a licensed home baker. I am nowhere near perfect, but I am very driven and motivated to become better at what I do and to inspire other moms and women that YOU CAN do this, as long as you believe in yourself and make the effort and sacrifices. I LOVE what I do, and I hope to continue this journey and set a great example to my children.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has NOT been easy. Coming into the cake decorating/baking world without knowing much was very difficult. Especially starting in the middle of a pandemic. I’m self-taught, so everything I’ve learned I’ve managed to figure it out with every failed attempt. Leaning cakes, Melting cakes, Bulging cakes, these have all been some struggles along the way that I’ve learned to master. It’s a learning process!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes. I only work with buttercream and minimal fondant. I am mostly known for my themed cakes! I love to get creative with every cake I make if my client allows me to of course. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in only seven months. Many people don’t believe I’ve been making cakes for seven months since my work is very advanced. I’m proud of myself. And I know this is what I am meant to do.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
This path I’ve chosen is ALWAYS risk-taking. There are so many times things don’t go as planned, and you have to figure out a solution even if it means changing it up a bit. Which is also a risk because a client might not want a change. I always like to ask them if it’s okay if I add a little touch of “me” to it, and they usually always agree and trust me! So I say take the risk!
