Conversations with Nikky T

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikky T.

Hi Nikky, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my journey into the entertainment world as a dancer. I was three years old when I discovered my love for the arts and performing. As I grew older, I took almost every dance class/style you could think of. My love for the stage soon crossed over into the music realm and I would always find myself with a mic in my hand, whether it was from the nearest piano player who let me sing, singing competitions, or talent shows. At the age of seventeen, I finally brought myself to the recording studio to see if this was something I could really pursue. Even though I grew up being an artsy kid, I was brought up by two working parents that both were heavily in the business industry. I was caught in between the two realms of pursuing a practical life or taking the risk of living like a musician. If you are unfamiliar with a musician’s lifestyle, it can be explained as this: you never know where or when your next opportunity will come or when your next paycheck will come. Nevertheless, I loved everything about the studio; from creating music to teaching myself to sing and to write. Music was something I could see myself doing every single day. As time passed, more opportunities started to come my way and I was taking every show, interview, studio session, music video, etc. as a way to grow as an artist, as well as a way to make connections/network.

At the age of eighteen, I started to study business at San Diego State University while also pursuing my music career. It was hard for me to balance being a full-time business student, a music career, as well as working to pay for my music expenses. Then one day everything changed for me. I went to my dad’s house seeking advice about what I wanted to do in life. I told him that I wasn’t happy with what I was doing, all I wanted to do was be around music. I didn’t want to take calculus and accounting classes, I just wanted to perform and make music. I remember this day so clearly because it was the day my life changed forever. My dad told me to look into music school, I was shocked because even though he had always supported my journey, I never would have thought he would be the one to tell me to leave everything holding me back behind and to just go for my dreams. Ever since then, I started at the Los Angeles Film School and moved to LA permanently. I have been surrounded by music every day and have been working with the most inspiring, talented, and hard-working people. The opportunities I have received out here have been endless, and I am so happy to be pursuing my music career in full force.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The entertainment industry has been one of the greatest journeys I have ever had in life, however, like every journey, there are many challenges I have to face. This could range from criticism from appearance, rejection, working with difficult people, and the list goes on. Everyone in life endures obstacles, however, it is how you work around them and keep going, is what determines your fate in the end. For example, if my song is rejected from a playlist, a radio station, or I don’t get picked to perform at a show because I don’t have the right “Image,” or my voice is not right for a producers track, or my songwriting isn’t good enough, I think to myself, “no point in dwelling on it, time to keep moving forward and focus on bettering myself and my craft.” After growing up in the industry from a young teenage girl to now a young adult, I think I have almost heard it all, which has enabled me to grow thick skin and push me forward to even bigger and better opportunities. I had to learn that every single person has their own opinions, and not everyone is going to like me or what I represent, nevertheless, all that matters is that I am doing this for myself and the dreams that I wake up and chase every single day. My biggest takeaway from my journey and this industry is: “As long as you believe in yourself, there will be no limitations to your success.”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Like most people in the art world, I started off as one thing but grew to develop my skills in many different areas. I started off as a dancer but grew to become widely passionate about singing and songwriting. I am mostly known as a singer/songwriter, however, I have been able to gain knowledge in the music Industry with incredible opportunities of managing, assisting, Interning, and working with artists like Rob $tone, Kid Buu, Frenchie Babyy, and 1deepdc. I also attend The Los Angeles Film School for music so I have been able to learn so much about engineering, mixing, and producing, as well as allowing me to network/connect with many talented peers from all over the globe. What I believe sets me apart from the rest is my openness and willingness to expand my knowledge of the music industry and my passion that continuously drives me forward to be the best artist and businesswoman I can be.

What were you like growing up?
The best way to describe myself as a young girl was: a dreamer. I believed I could do anything I put my mind to; whether it was conquering my first ballet class, the high beam in gymnastics, show jumping on a horse, backflips on my trampoline, biking or rollerblading through the neighborhood, singing to hundreds of people at talent shows, the list goes on. I loved to meet new people and try new things; I was a very outgoing girl that loved to talk, laugh, and sing. Everyone would joke that they would hear me before they would see me. I was never afraid to be myself, my parents taught me the value of that at a young age. I took this confidence with me everywhere I went, and to this day it has helped me push through so many obstacles, opened so many doors, and has made me the person I am today.
