Conversations with Neb Doe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neb Doe.

Hi Neb, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a hip-hop recording artist who goes by the name of Neb Doe, I’m from Los Angeles, California and I grew up on the Westside. I’m a first-generation Ethiopian American, most of my family emigrated from Ethiopia to LA in the late-80’s. Growing up, there wasn’t much music played in the house unless it was from my older cousins, as a kid my cousin Ermias visited us and would always have BET on and that was when I was first introduced to hip-hop. Later, in high school, I became more of a hip-hop head and would write lyrics in my spare time and be quick to freestyle when I got the chance to. As time progressed, as a hobby I would record songs over known rap instrumentals. The first time I released music online was in late 2012, and by 2013 I released a collaboration project with some friends of mine.

As a solo artist, I dropped my first official project, which was an ep called “3-2-1”, back in 2016 on Sound Cloud. From then on, I started taking the music journey more seriously. After my ep “3-2-1”, I released many singles on Sound Cloud and visuals as well. In 2018 I dropped my single “Movie” which became available on all major platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, etc.). Following up my single “Movie”, in 2019, my second project “Stay Quiet the Music Speak” dropped, which had ten tracks including “Movie”. Through the rest of 2019 and 2020, I released three singles which became part of my third and most recent project, “They Listen to Fame Not Music” which has 12 tracks. Now I have been recording and planning to come out with a 4th project which will be an ep.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Being a recording artist is not an easy thing especially nowadays because you have to, pretty much, do everything on your own when you are going the indie route. I have to be my own manager, handle my own marketing and promo, record and engineer my own music, communicate with directors to shoot music videos/photography, and much more. I had to spend money investing in my music and also time so I definitely have to make it worth it. Even though you have to rely more on yourself, you reap more of the benefits by having control of everything and not have someone blur your vision of what you want to bec0me. It hasn’t been a smooth road but it is a journey that everyone has to go through in order to be self-made and become the master of your own fate.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as being able to leave a legacy behind after your time has passed and being known for contributing something great to society through your talents or skills. I also define success as accomplishing your goals that you have set for yourself but yet still striving for more and still remaining hungry. In this lifetime I want to achieve success by connecting with my audience and inspire people through the arts and entertainment whether it be through music and/or film. Just like the many artists who have inspired me to tap into my creative nature, I want to do the same for others. I want to make sure that the name Neb Doe lasts forever and has meant something to the hip-hop culture and my city, Los Angeles.
